There is a brand new drug on the market that can speed up the body’s metabolism and pack on muscle. But what’s even more amazing is that this pill can replicate the process of rigorous exercise and allow a person to burn fat without ever moving a muscle!
There is no limit when it comes to the excuses people give for being fat. A few of my favorites are:
“I’m just big-boned.”
“There are a lot of overweight people in my family so it’s just my genetics.”
“I’m just bulking up and then I’m going to start hitting the gym and get cut.”
“I’ve still got some baby fat on me.”
“This is just weight that I haven’t lost from my pregnancy.” (Typically used by women five years after having a baby)
Contudo, one excuse people may not be able to use anymore is that their metabolism is too slow. That’s because there is a new drug that might be able to perform the miracle of controlling your metabolism all while duplicating the effects that rigorous exercise has on the body. It also pumps up your muscles as well. And there’s a wonderful catch to this too... you’ll never have to move a muscle!!
This amazing pill was developed by Dr. Ronald Evans at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, Califórnia. And the pill was no accident either as it was designed with overweight people in mind. Evans’ creation works by chemically switching on PPAR-d which, por sua vez, causes a shift in the body’s calorie balance so that more are burned and the muscles are worked at the same time, even while the body is at rest.
You might say, “That’s great but what the hell is PPAR-d?” Bem, PPAR-d is a genetic switch in the body that controls the cells ability to burn fat. It is highly active while a person is involved in rigorous exercise which is why so many fat calories are burned off during this time. So imagine the possibilities if one could simply take a pill to duplicate this effect.
Infelizmente, this pill isn’t on the market just yet because there’s one big hang-up: It hasn’t even been tested on humans yet. It’s only been used on mice and as the old saying goes, mice aren’t people. But don’t lose hope yet because the promising results of Dr. Evans’ study with mice do implicate that there is plenty of potential with the pill.
Ronald Evans’ study saw a group of adult mice put on a high calorie diet where they also received his drug which, strangely enough, was a synthetic designed to mimic fat. The adult mice receiving the drug showed increased resistance to weight gain and burned quite a bit of fat too. One thing that the drug didn’t provide them with though was increased endurance.
But this so-called exercising pill did seem to improve the quality of the muscles in the mice since it provides the simulation of working out within the body. It also reduced fatty tissue, lowered the amount of fat moving around in their blood, and lowered glucose levels in them.
There’s also reason to believe this pill could repeat the same effects in a human body while lowering one’s risk of heart disease and diabetes too. Dr. Evans said of this possibility that the drug does, “Result in protection against weight gain on high fat and high caloric diets. We\'re very excited by the potential extension to people.”
He went on to explain that with the metabolism raising effects of the drug, “You then have lower fatty acid levels in your blood, lower triglyceride levels, and lower sugar levels. They all appear to be linked.” Evans also told people attending the Experimental Biology 2007 that this metabolic could battle syndrome x which includes the deadly combo of high blood pressure, high levels of fat in the blood, diabetes, and heart disease.
Evans’ research with the PPAR-d gene goes beyond just the invention of his amazing pill. Afinal, it was Ronald Evans who, while a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator, first discovered just exactly what it was that the gene actually did. Through his research he was able to determine that the PPAR-d gene was the master regulatory control for fat metabolism.
But Evans didn’t just stop with figuring out the function of PPAR-d as he decided to launch an experiment to learn more about this gene. He permanently turned on the PPAR-d switch in a set of mice to see what the effects would be. They were dramatic! These mice developed a resistance to weight gain and possessed twice the physical endurance that normal mice have.
This led to the term “marathon mice” as these creatures were able to run over an hour longer than the set of mice that didn’t have their PPAR-d switch turned on permanently. The downfall to his discovery though is that the PPAR-d switch must be switched on before birth which would offer no help to adults whose muscle are already fully mature and would need fat burning more than anyone.
It also sounds somewhat dangerous to even consider doing something like this to a human being as the outcome is sketchy to say the least. That’s where his pill comes into play as it can offer the benefits of PPAR-d switching in small doses. He’s hoping that with a one-a-day pill, permanent metabolic engineering would be unnecessary. Também, it would be a lot safer and still give people the same effects of burning excess body fat and improving the quality of muscles.
Contudo, there are many people who don’t exactly believe that Evans’ research and pill will prove to be the weight loss drug to end all weight loss drugs. Especially Leah Whigham, who is a nutrition research scientist at the University of Wisconsin. She warned, “The most obvious caution is that this work is in mice, which are much different from humans and have different energy expenditure mechanisms. It remains to be seen if this research can translate into something useful for humans.”
Whigham also mentioned, “Something that works in all mice of a given strain might not be as effective across a population of humans with differing genetic, ethnic, cultural environmental backgrounds. That doesn’t mean this research isn’t very exciting. It is just very preliminary at this point.”
But despite what the naysayers think, it is almost impossible not to get excited about a single pill that could give you the effects of exercising and working out all while sitting on the couch watching TV. It seriously does sound like something out of some futuristic movie. The problem is though that it may be of the distant future variety.
Drugs such as these will require additional testing before they’re even ready to be put into a human’s body. And after that, they will have to go through several phases just to meet the Food and Drug Administration’s rigorous guidelines.
Contudo, I can’t help but root for this pill as its muscle building and healthy lifestyle effects could be a benefit to athletes and other people everywhere assuming it works as well in people as it does in mice. So let’s all hope that this pill is everything it’s hyped up to be for the benefit of us all.
