I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw that there was a country where steroid use was not considered an evil, unholy act that needs to be brought to a halt before it ends the world. Even more amazing, steroid use in this country is really common and even accepted.
Sometimes I sit back and dream about a place... a place where athletes can use whatever they need in order to advance their physique to its fullest potential without worrying about police raids in the middle of the night. A country where they can get a package of anabolic steroids delivered to their door without the guilty conscious that comes with it. A land where a person can get unbiased and truthful information about steroids and other forms of muscle enhancement without having to feel like an outcast of society.
But you and I know that this type of place is just a dream. There are too many phobias out in the world today about roids and too many people who think that professional sports are being turned upside down by a few juicers. Thanks to the media and Congress, there is a war being directed against steroids where authorities have the okay to hunt down users like they are violent criminals.
Echter, the amazing thing is that there is somewhere out there in our world where none of these injustices occur. A country where it is actually acceptable for an athlete to use steroids without having to hide in a dark room somewhere.
And just where is this place where muscle-building can occur freely?
This country where the juice flows freely can be found in southern Asia sandwiched in-between China and India and goes by the name of Nepal. In this seemingly, inconspicuous country that is landscaped by the Himalayan Mountains athletes are free to purchase steroids and use them without persecution – which may shock other countries.
And this shocking revelation came to light when a double gold medal winner in the South Asian Games (the equivalent of a high school version of the Olympics) named Rajendra Bhandari tested positive for steroids. Many of the other countries were appalled by this incident having no idea what else was in store for them upon further investigation.
This further investigation revealed that Nepali athletes have been using steroids for years and juicing has actually become pretty common in the country. As an anonymous runner told a news correspondent, “If you want to know the reality, using steroids is nothing new. I have done it, and many others have done it.”
This runner wasn’t the only Nepali athlete to speak on the subject as a sprinter also weighed in on the matter by mentioning that he was using steroids during the Nepal National Games because he was hampered by an injury which, op zijn beurt, caused a lack of confidence. He spoke about it saying, “Senior players (atleten) gave me the idea. Players basically use it before any tournaments to stay fit and confident.”
The sprinter also laid out how easy it is to purchase steroids in Nepal by revealing, “I bought it for Rs 223 (223 rupees or about $4.16 USD) at Nilam Medical Store.” In other words, this sprinter was able to just walk right down the street to his local drug store and buy the Deca Durabolin that he used. Must be nice, huh?
The owner of the Nilam Medical Store was eventually approached and asked about how he sold the teenage sprinter the Deca. The man had no problem admitting that he sold the steroids to the teenage sprinter either. “My profession allows me to provide the dose. You can get Deca Durabolin anywhere in Kathmandu (the capital city of Nepal) but people point out our store because it is located in front of the stadium.”
Despite the fact that there is an increased amount of new coverage on Nepal’s casual stance on juicing, steroid use is certainly nothing new in the country. An 84 year-old, Gaja Raj Joshi, who is the only living member from Nepal’s first international athletic team which included four members, made this clear when he spoke of how he and fellow athletes were taking steroids all the way back in 1951.
Joshi explained, “During our time also doctors used to give us a kind of chocolate which would enhance our performance and heal injuries," Hij zei. It was not a problem since he was never caught. But he faced a problem of a different sort: "After consuming those chocolates, we could not perform in bed for at least a week.”
Gaja Raj Joshi realizes these days that those “chocolates” were actually a steroid but he has little problem living with this memory. He actually seems to sympathize with steroids users as he shed some light on the Rajendra Bhandari case by expressing, “They (the sports governing bodies) should have prevented it beforehand as snatching away medals won is simply unthinkable.”
What many of the Nepalese people don’t know yet is that WADA (het Wereld Anti-Doping Agentschap) is trying to extend the reach of its influence everywhere in the world, including the small mountainous country of Nepal. WADA, infamous for harassing international athletes and sports teams alike, has ruled that the use of steroids like the Deca that the anonymous sprinter takes off and on are illegal to use for any athlete who competes in a sport Even if they are nestled high up in the country that is home to 8 of the world’s 14 largest mountains.
Since the incident when Rajendra Bhandari tested positive for steroids after winning his two gold medals, there has been further probing into Nepal’s lax juicing standards by international organizations. The suspicious Nepal-German Athletics Development Project group has been raising some eyebrows with their interest in the subject. Some have even accused the organization of giving Bhandari steroids without his knowledge, echter, these reports have been heavily disputed by the German Embassy.
The thought Germany, or any other country, would actually stoop low enough to give someone steroids without their knowledge may be a little out of touch with reality. But the fact that Nepali is suddenly drawing negative attention for their casual attitude for steroids definitely is reality. It’s unfortunate that the international sports authorities now have another target to go after. It may not be long before Nepal is pressured into becoming just another country where juicers must live in fear.
