While I'm used to seeing athletes busted for steroids in the Major Leagues and NFL, it's a little more rare to see it happen in the NBA. Hingegen, the rarity happened when the Memphis Grizzlies' O.J. Mayo was recently suspended for using Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA).
As I suspected, Mayo gave the old 'it was in the supplements I was using' line, but in this case, he's probably telling the truth. Für eine Sache, tests have shown that DHEA isn't one of the better steroids to use when you're trying to increase athletic performance (which makes me wonder why the NBA bans it). And another thing is that Mayo is a 6'4", 210-pound guy, so I doubt he's been doing a whole lot of juicing in his career.
Auf jeden Fall, the over-the-counter supplement that Mayo took is going to put him out of action at a time when the Grizzlies need him the worst. Jetzt, the Grizzlies are 2.5 games out of a playoff spot, which means they have a very realistic shot at the postseason for the first time in franchise history.
Even without Mayo, they may still have a good chance at making the playoffs. Mayo is averaging a solid 12.2 points per game, but he's recently been moved to the bench. Hardly what you'd expect from a guy who was picked third overall in 2008 after being one of the most hyped high school players of all-time.
