Endlich, a major television broadcast speaks some truth about steroids!
My friend and Elite Fitness.com attorney Rick Collins sent me the following about a new episode of HBO Real Sports.
"HBO Real Sports contacted me a few months ago about finding a steroid user willing to go on camera about their effects. I sent them a copy of Legal Muscle, gave them a lengthy account of the truth about steroids (which surprised them), and referred them to a variety of folks including John Romano, and Drs. Norm Fost and Karl Friedl."
"The end product aired tonight on HBO, and will replay through the month. It is a ground-breaking refutation of the steroid hysteria that has crossed the nation. They even drive a stake through the heart of the persistent lie about Lyle Alzado\'s demise."
"Romano and Fost, and aging steroid enthusiast Bob Klapp, all come off credibly and articulately. The foil, steroid propagandist Gary Wadler, comes off as a dubious alarmist. I\'m elated about the end result, and satisfied with my simple credit during the broadcast\'s end credits. What a victory for truth, and something for me to effectively use in my clients\' defense. Please spread the word about it."
Here\'s a link to discuss the show on the Elite Fitness.com Forums.
Here\'s a description of the program from the HBO site.
Virtually everybody from sportswriters and talk-show hosts to league executives and U.S. Congressmen has weighed in on the subject of steroid use. In a tell-all book that made headlines this spring, former baseball star Jose Canseco wrote about the positive effects of steroids in reasonable doses. Was he right? Armen Keteyian, who has been reporting on illegal substances in sports for the past five years, investigates the belief held by some scientists that steroids, when properly administered, cause no harm in adults.
And here\'s the times when the show will air.

Rick Collins also sent me the following about the FDA - I think you will find it interesting.
On Friday, June 24th Alan Feldstein on behalf of Collins, McDonald and Gann attended a small private gathering in Los Angeles for Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA). Alan has known and worked with Senator Harkin for a number of years and Senator Harkin has been a strong advocate and supporter of the dietary supplement industry. Senator Harkin is one of the authors of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act.
At the luncheon, Alan had a chance to spend a few moments with not only Senator Harkin, but also his Chief of Staff. Alan discussed with Senator Harkin the DHEA bill, the status of the appointment of the new head of FDA, the status of FDA’s regulation of New Dietary Ingredients, and the relationship between FDA and Industry. He also got to hear some of Senator’s concerns and issues.
As to DHEA, Senator Harkin is well aware of the bill since one of the bill’s sponsors is Senator Grassley, the other senator from Iowa. Senator Harkin is closely monitoring this bill and is very hopeful that he can get Senator Grassley to understand that DHEA is not an anabolic steroid, not a public health risk, and is used by hundreds of thousands of Americans. Senator Harkin, eigentlich, told Alan that he himself takes DHEA. As part of the discussion, Alan offered the Senator’s Chief of Staff to meet with other members of the Senator’s staff in order to brief them on the DHEA issue. Alan and Rick Collins are preparing to visit Washington in the fall to accomplish this task. While no promises can be made, Alan and Rick are increasingly forecasting that this bill may never see the light of day.
One of the goals of Senator Harkin is to make supplements covered by the food stamp program. He is frustrated that low income Americans, who often have bad eating habits and need supplements, can use food stamps to buy junk food but not to buy vitamins and minerals.
While there have been no new developments with respect to the New Dietary Ingredient guidance, Senator Harkin was intrigued by Alan’s proposal that there be an Ombudsman within FDA who could help FDA and Industry work together. He and Alan promised to discuss this more in the fall.
Endlich, with respect to a new head of FDA, Senator Harkin informed the gathering that he asks the same question of all potential heads of FDA - "Is there enough enforcement power within DSHEA for FDA to protect consumers from dangerous supplements." He informed us that they have always answered yes. Thus he is confident DSHEA works and should continue to exist and govern the use of supplements in this country.
