It’s time for weight loss pills and drinks to step to the side as researchers have discovered a revolutionary vaccine that can help people shed unwanted pounds. What’s even more interesting is that it causes a major loss of fat as well.
If you go onto any major Internet search engine and type in the words “weight loss”, you’ll find thousands of websites that are dedicated to bringing you the latest and greatest products designed to help you shed pounds quickly. These weight loss aids come in various forms including pills, snack bars, drinks, and even ridiculous things that claim to be “secret” formules. Maar, despite the numerous forms that companies use to deliver weight loss to the public, you’d be hard-pressed to find a vaccine that could perform such a function in your search results.
And why would you find a vaccine that causes weight loss? Na alles, vaccines are living strains of viruses or bacteria that are put into the body in an effort to help someone develop immunity to a certain disease. They work because the immune system is able to destroy a watered-down version of bacteria or a virus and thus remember them. In essentie, a vaccine helps the immune system get ready for the real thing.
So really, what in the world does a vaccine have to do with weight loss? My answer used to be “nothing” because vaccines are commonly associated with some sort of disease or sickness. At least that’s what I thought until I heard that a new vaccine has been developed that can help people to trim down their waistline.

Dubbed the “fat vaccine” by the media (or CTY009-GhrQb if you will), this potential miracle has received worldwide attention as of late despite the fact that it is still in clinical trials. Developed at the Scripps Research Institute in California, the vaccine has created a buzz ever since news of its existence was first leaked. Many people already believe that this fat vaccine is the answer to end all obesity that people have been waiting for. En, as you’ll find out, these beliefs aren’t totally unfounded.
The fat vaccine has already been met with success in some preliminary lab testing. The only catch though is that these tests were performed on rats, not humans. Back in late July, researchers at Scripps Research Institute injected various male rats with the fat vaccine in order to measure its effectiveness upon them. They were fed their normal, everyday diets yet, amazingly, experienced a weight loss along with a reduction in body fat.
The results of the study proved that the fat vaccine had a positive effect on the rat’s body metabolism and energy use. It also was very effective in stopping the all too common scenario of losing weight and gaining it right back (the “yo-yo effect”) that often occurs in dieting
So what was it that made this vaccine cause the shocking weight loss effect that occurred while the rats were still on their normal diet? Goed, it all begins with a hormone in the body called ghrelin. Ghrelin is a short chain of amino acids (Peptide) that is released by cells in the stomach. Although scientists aren’t totally clear on ghrelin’s effectiveness, they do know that it creates a hunger in mammals when it is released.
This has been proven by studies done on people that have shown their appetites increasing after being given ghrelin. Another point about ghrelin to remember is that after people lose weight, ghrelin levels rapidly raise and cause people to get hungrier than usual. So the obvious conclusion is that a reduction in ghrelin can have a positive effect on weight loss.
But whether or not ghrelin will work for humans is not so cut and dried. Researchers are still skeptical about the prospect of CTY009-GhrQb working as well in human bodies as it does in rat bodies. It’s also important to note that the vaccine simply provides an effect on the immune system; it doesn’t take pounds off by itself. The people themselves will need to be responsible for this by controlling their eating.
Besides this, there could also be unknown side effects waiting for humans who use the vaccine. An investigative science professor at Imperial College London named Stephen Bloom weighed in with his opinion on the matter by saying, “What is surprising about this study is that by producing antibodies to block ghrelin, it works as well as it does. This is an important proof of principle but there are problems. Bijvoorbeeld, if you develop antibodies against something, you can\'t get rid of them very easily. So if there\'s anything bad you can\'t undo it.”
Professor Bloom went on to say that, “Since ghrelin is present in the brain you might start an immune system response against the brain. It\'s not necessarily a very safe thing to do. I wouldn\'t want to be a volunteer. Maybe we can find a safer way do to it and in that way the study is useful."
Niettemin, there are plenty of people willing to jump into the unknown and put the fat vaccine to the test. 112 obese people to be exact. And while their fears may not be eased by what Professor Stephen Bloom had to say about the issue, they can take comfort in the fact that they could be pioneers in a new revolutionary form of weight loss.
A form of weight loss that Scripps Research chemistry professor Kim Janda seems to be optimistic about. Janda stated, “While food intake was unchanged in all testing groups, those who were given the most effective vaccines gained the least amount of weight. To have an impact on appetite and weight gain, ghrelin first has to move from the bloodstream into the brain where, over long periods, it stimulates the retention of a level of stored energy as fat. Our study is the first published evidence proving that preventing ghrelin from reaching the central nervous system can produce a desired reduction in weight gain.”

While Janda does seem positive about the new fat vaccine, he’s still cautious of making any bold statements as he added, “We\'re not claiming that our study answers the question of obesity treatment once and for all. What we are saying, and what our study confirms, is that this looks like a serious, workable solution to the problem. And while much more research is needed to understand the full therapeutic potential of immunopharmacotherapy in combating obesity, these initial results are extremely positive. Right now it appears that active vaccination against ghrelin is one avenue that can slow weight gain and fat build-up in the body.”
The results of the human trials for CTY009-GhrQb are expected to be ready in the near future and will be highly anticipated. I know that I’ll be eager to see what happens with the trials. Just imagine a simple vaccine that would allow a person to eat their regular diet and not only lose weight, but fat as well. Let’s all hope that one day, a safe version of this vaccine will be available for personal use because it would be a major aid not only to the obese, but to bodybuilders as well.
