If you want to look hot and remain healthy in your later years, it’s an absolute must that you avoid these detrimental anti-aging treatment myths.
Nobody dreams about being a flabby, middle-aged sloth with major crows feet and a face like Mick Jagger. And if this is your dream, then you really need to find a new one! In any case, our desire to remain young, fit and attractive - even in our golden years - is a huge reason why people obsess about anti-aging treatments and remedies. Unfortunately, it’s also a big reason behind some of the myths that exist in the industry today, and can put a serious wrinkle in your efforts to stay young. This being said, here’s a look at some of the biggest anti-aging treatment myths out there.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #1: Wrinkle creams and similar products work instantly - We all want instant gratification with the products that we buy, and marketers want us to believe in instant results as well. But if you’re buying a wrinkle cream or anti-aging serum and expecting to look younger than Justin Bieber in a week, you are going to be severely disappointed. The large majority of the time, you’ll need to use a product at least a month or more to see any results. Assuming you can stick with something for 60-90 days, you should see some definite results. The key is to avoid giving up on an anti-aging product just because it doesn’t magically transform you within a few days.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #2: HGH and anti-aging medicine are the only paths towards youthfulness - Both human growth hormone and anti-aging clinics have received quite a bit of positive press in recent years. After all, those who work with trained professionals at these clinics can use HGH to increase muscle, lose fat and up their sex drive. However, frequently visiting anti-aging clinics can put a major dent in your bank account and - as you’ll see in this article - there are plenty of other ways to fight off Father Time.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #3: Aging people need to work WAY harder to keep weight off - One of the ugly facts of aging is that our metabolism begins to slow as we get older primarily due to a decline in muscle mass (muscle burns calories while we rest). Unfortunately, many people try to use this as their out to becoming the typical overweight, man-boob-sporting American. But the truth is that the slowing of your metabolic rate is a very gradual process, and you can still keep weight off without putting yourself through the ringer. Case in point, a slowly declining metabolism isn’t an excuse for avoiding workouts.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #4: Over-use of hair gel causes hair loss - Don’t let the myth regarding hair gel causing hair loss keep you from squirting more product on your head than Mario Lopez. Gel, mousse, hairspray, etc. don’t actually do any damage to your hair follicles because they don’t go deep enough into the roots. Even still, it’s not recommended that you use excessive amounts of hair product because you’ll look like a douche bag.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #5: Weight training should be limited to high reps/low weight as you get older - As alluded to in Myth #3, muscle is very important in regards to helping us burn calories and keeping weight off. However, there is still a sect of anti-aging amateurs who preach that your workouts should gravitate towards high reps/lower weight as you get older. And sure, you might want to cut out some of the powerlifting at age 45 to avoid injuries. But on the other hand, you should still work in sessions with heavy weight/low reps so that you keep your muscle up and the calories off.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #6: Botox is a miracle cure for wrinkles - The lazy (and rich) person’s way out of putting work into anti-wrinkle treatments is to opt for Botox. But the reality of the situation is that these injections don’t actually do anything except relax the wrinkles through toxic botulinim. Even worse is that Botox costs quite a bit of money, and you have to get the injections every few months. In short, your best bet for wrinkle prevention is a steady dose of eating right, using skin cream, avoiding too much sun and drinking plenty of water.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #7: Aging is all about genetics - One’s genes play a huge role in everything from determining height to bodybuilding potential. However, many people try to take this too far and say that aging is also largely determined by genetics. The truth is that, while genes do play a small role in how good your skin will look later on in life, the large majority of anti-aging factors are determined by things you control such as diet, exercise and resting. So just because your mother smokes like a chimney and her skin feels like cardboard doesn’t mean you have to suffer the same fate.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #8: Supplements can substitute for eating right and working out - It’s amazing how many people are trying to find the fountain of youth in pill form, and it’s equally amazing how badly people fail to age gracefully as a result. Just like with working out, taking supplements and pills isn’t going to replace hard work. The best way to ease the aging process is to work out on a regular basis, eat a well-balanced diet, and get your rest. Sure this sounds like a perfectly-designed plan from the 1950’s, but there’s a reason why people have stuck to these guns over the years. Here\'s an interesting article on WebMD about the Anti-Aging Diet.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #9: People with tan skin age better - There’s no denying that people look sexier with a tan, but does darker skin also mean that you’ll age better as well? Absolutely not! The only basis behind the adage that tanner people are masters of anti-aging involves their increased melanin, which helps the skin better stave off damage from the sun. Those with fairer skin can also look good well into their later years by applying sunscreen when outside.
Anti-Aging Treatment Myth #10: You can reverse aging and damage to your body - The human body is incredibly resilient, and able to withstand quite a bit of abuse. However, this doesn’t mean that you can smoke, drink and operate on 4 hours of sleep during your 20’s, then simply make up for this in your 30’s and beyond. Sure you can improve your appearance simply by dropping bad habits and getting some sleep, but what’s done is done. This being said, make every year count in your quest to avoid becoming a wrinkly, worn-out grouch later on in life.
