Great Post by Glenn Pendley - I thought it was worthwhile posting here

this is in response to the thread below, and specifically to those who just ASSUME that anyone making good gains is on drugs.
i train a team of olympic weightlifters... some of whom are very good. i DO NOT work with athletes who are as naturally strong or athletic as NFL players. yet i see some kids make gains in strength and bodyweight that would make some of the gains made by football players look small by comparison.
i have a 105k lifter, who had lifted for 4 years when he came to this team. he weighed about 190lbs, olympic syle squattd about 330lbs, snatched 154lbs, and could clean about 220lbs when i first saw him. a year later he weighed 240lbs, snatched 300lbs, olympic style squatted 500lbs, clean and jerked 363lbs... roids? NO. just a year of training, good, hard training. its stupid to accuse someone just because their potential might be higher than yours... i see this crap all the time. my best 77 kilo lifter is ranked 6th overall in the US junior mens ranking list... after only 18 months of training. at 170lbs of bodyweight, he can snatch 280lbs (127.5kilos) and clean and jerk 352lbs (160kilos). he also looks like a bodybuilder, very muscular and cut... he can also bench press about 340lbs, even though he benches about once a month, if that, just for fun. ive seen a bunch of people accuse him of drugs. the fact is, hes just a superior athlete. hes the type of guy that if he was 6foot tall instead of 5 feet 6 inches, hed probably be playing major college football, and probably have the talent to maybe go pro.
i remember when i first started powerlifting a long time ago... i competed for the first time after just a few weeks training, and squatted 500lbs my first meet. the very next workout i did 515 for 5 reps... 4 weeks later i did 573 in a contest, 4 weeks after that i did 606 in a contest, and about 6 weeks after that i did 639 in a contest... i eventually squatted over 800. when i first started, my training partners couldnt figure out why i did the same squat workout as they did, but every damn week i just got significantly stronger, and they didnt... or at leat not to the same extent. im sure some people thought i was on drugs. i wasnt. im just a natural squatter, lots of things come hard to me, but squatting strength came easy, always has. i dont think i worked harder than anyone else on the squat... god knows ive struggled and worked my ass off in the deadlift and bench press, but i just gained o the squat pretty much no matter what i did, one set, 5 sets, high reps, low reps... it never really mattered.
all of you guys who are so quick to judge people, and discout their work or natural gifts, should realize that there are a whole lot of guys out there who are just naturally great athletes. yeah, a lot of guys do use drugs... BUT in my experience, there are a lot more mullets who youd never be impressed with walking around in gyms bench pressing 200lbs and squatting 250lbs that are using drugs than the guys who are good athletes. im always amazed every time i get into conversatoions with guys in a gym... guys that youd NEVER suspect of using, and they are on their 3rd or 4th cycle... and they have NO muscle. and they look at guys who are big and strong and all they think about is "what drugs is he on?" its bullshit. a lot of the guys they are talking about arent using because they DONT HAVE TO!!
