the fast twitch "cells" do not go away, they simply atrophy due to non use and they don't store as much glycogen.. (they get smaller and weaker).. but they can change over more oxygen thus stamina and endurance is increased..

To me, Muscle memory is a common term for neuromuscular facilitation, which is the process of the neuromuscular system memorizing motor skills.

However, that term is also used when referring to the rate at which a trained individual will bounce back from a long period of lack of stimulus.

what are we talking about here?
 
I have to go off my own experience. Didn't lift weights for 3 years due to injury. Got small and fat (skinny fat kid syndrome). This is month three back into lifting. I've gained 25 lbs solid muscle, all lifts have gone up at least 100 lbs.

The first time around three years ago, it took me a year to do that. Granted, I started this time with good knowledge and experience, but I believe muscle memory is something that stays with you forever. Kevin Levrone is a perfect example of this. He went four years no lifting, and after 8 weeks he looks and lifts like an animal.

good question. No way to even discuss "muscle memory" meaningfully unless we define the term for the purposes of this discussion. Sometimes you hear it used to refer to strength gains, which would be more a function of neuromuscular recoordination, and other times lean body mass gains.

for my purposes, the bounce back period.
 
Maybe it would help if you explained how long you have been on the shelf first. Instead of worrying about that just get back to training when you can. It's a hard question to answer.
 
I can tell you from personal experiance muscle memory really does exist. Cant say its Effin forever but if I had to guess I would think to a degree it would be.
