my computer is runnin slow as hell , and a little window popped up sayin that my virtual memory is low, what can i do to increase my virtual memory

If you have Windows XP:
Start
Control Pannel
System Properties (Icon)
Advanced (Tab)
Performance - Settings (Button)
Virtual memory - Change (Button)
Then just select the drive letter.. most likely c and put a higher number

You may also want to run Disk Clean up and Disk Defrag.
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools
Then run disk clean up... followed by Disk Defrag.. this should be done before you go to bed because chances are the disk defrag will take a long time.

i changed the virtual memory number to 744 the highest i could , seemed to help , is there anything i can delete to help

I think what that means is that you are out of hard drive space. I think you should be able to increase your Virtual Memory to what ever hard drive space you have left. Mine came pre set at initial size 1536, max size 3072. Try deleting some stuff so you can free up space on your computer.. You know you don't need all those porn videos you have saved

i have a small 7200RPM 10G drive that I use for nothing but virtmem, has a 2G Virtual memory partition on it. Changing virtual memory to another partition on a used hard drive gains nothing over increasing its size on your C: partition.

so u think i should get another drive to use for virtmem

If you want to improve your swap file performance you'd rather use a 10.000RPM SCSI HD

If that is as high as you could go then you must be running out of free space on your disk. The virtual memory increases on it's own up to the amt of unused space on the disk.

i was wrong about that i went back and looked the initial size for a page file was 368 and the max i could set was 4096 mb , whatever that all means

Another thing you can do hotzie is run disk cleanup, reduce the amount of space IE uses for temporary internet files. That's under tools:internet options in IE. As c3web said you are probably running out of disk space on your c: partition, as that's where the virtmem defaults its position to.

Another thing you can do to increase performance slightly is change minimum and maximum virtmem file sizes to the same number. Just make sure you you have enough available space on your drive before you do it.

The reason changing position of your virtmem to another partition on a used drive won't help is because the drive head will have to seek for both user files and swapping, and can actually decrease performance, depending on where in the drive geometry the file is placed. If you were to get a new drive, clone your current drive onto the new one, and use your old one for a swap file partition.

You have plenty of space, never mind anything said before.

Set your virtmem size to twice your physical ram size, both min and max.

Defrag

That's it.

Then I would set both the minimum and the maximum to be the same number, 2.5 times your RAM with a minimum of 1GB. That way your pagefile won't get fragmented as it grows because it won't grow to begin with.

it says my ram is 248 mb ,so i should set them both to 620

SCSI are old school. I would go with dual Serial ATA Raptors and run them in a raid array.
I'm running dual 300gig maxtor serial ata drives with 16mbs of cache.. beat that.

HUH? lol My main computer has 2 Western Digital Raptors 36.7GB each running at 10,000 RPM with 8MB Cache Serial ATA150.

My server has dual 160gig hard drives and I am getting ready to buy 2 more just for my music. I also have a 8 computer network. You want to get into competition bring out the benchmarks in a new thread. Prefer 3dmark 2005. :)

Now how about lets help out Hotzi.

Yes you need to back up all your important files before you format but IMO it’s the best way to keep all the clutter off of your computer. I format about once a year now. When I was messing with over clocking and gaming seemed like I had to format every 3-6 months but my computer would scream.

If you have windows xp you can simply boot from the cd and format and install easily. I like to put all my drivers back on in a certain sequence but if you are not sure what drivers to use with your hardware XP will find them for you.

After I format I have a long list of shit I add back in.

Virus protection
Spyware protection
Java
ect....

It usually takes me 6-7 hours to add everything back in but I have a ton of crap I put back into my computer. When I format computers for people they are amazed at how much better it runs.

You couldn't handle what I have for servers..
I run several very busy sites.. For each site we have a pair of dual 3.4 gig xeons running 3 10k drives with 4 gigs of ram.. One is our http and one is our db server... did i mention im running dual 23in lcd's for my home pc?

lol I do not need all that. 4 gigs of ram will slow benchmark down. I run 1 gig if XMS dual channel and it’s plenty fast for me. So what's your score on 3d Mark?
