MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- A computer crash erased detailed records from Miami-Dade County's first widespread use of touchscreen voting machines, raising again the specter of election troubles in Florida, where the new technology was supposed to put an end to such problems.

The loss of data underscores problems with the touchscreen voting machines, the citizen's group said. "This is a disaster waiting to happen," said Lida Rodriguez-Taseff, chairwoman of the Miami-Dade Election Reform Coalition. "Of course it's worrisome."

The group is concerned about the machines' effectiveness, following revelations about other problems with the system. Last month, state officials said the touchscreen systems used by 11 counties had a bug that would make a manual recount impossible. Earlier this month, a newspaper study indicated touchscreen machines did not perform as well as those that scanned paper ballots.

Florida counties without the touchscreen machines use optiscan technology, in which computers read voters' pencil marks on paper ballots, and would be able to do physical recounts in tight races.

How hard can coloring in a little bubble be on a ballot and letting a machine scan it ?
We all did this in school hundreds of times with a #2 pencil..

TALLAHASSEE --

Secretary of State Glenda Hood pledged Tuesday not to
campaign for political candidates while overseeing Florida elections,
ruling out a repeat of one controversy from the 2000 presidential
campaign.
Hood, a Republican, said she would not take any role in campaigns for
president or other office while secretary of state. "I don't think
that's my role now in the position I hold," Hood said. "I think
the only way someone does something like is to take a leave of
absence."
Hood's predecessor, Katherine Harris, rankled Democrats by becoming the
honorary co-chairwoman of George W. Bush's Republican presidential
campaign in Florida. When Florida's voting ended in a near-tie, Harris'
role and questions about her impartiality added controversy to the
recount of disputed ballots.
The ex-Orlando mayor gave her decision while briefing reporters on
election preparations for 2004. She would not comment on Harris, now a
Republican member of Congress.

Just how harris denied the 2nd manual recount in 2000 thus giving her a nice cozy position in Dubya's adminstration

20 bucks says all of us who vote democrat or 3rd party in Florida will magically deleted and non counted.
