(i posted this on the chat board, and some idiot flamed me... so i figured maybe this would be a more appropriate place to post) Okay, i just received a personal trainer job at my gym... i'm very proud and excited by it. But while i was getting my -job training- i got dirty looks, like "who the fuck is this" (by the way i'm only 18)... the ppl giving me the looks were not the 250 pounders (i'm friends with every big guy in the place), they were the little "shithead wife beater wearing 135 pound" guys, I know everyone has to start somewhere but i also know they won't accept critisim from me (just from the looks they gave me)but they are the ones who have bad form and risk injury . Now i'm a trainer it's my job to tell these kids not to bend their backs in half when benchpressing or i won't be a trainer for long... any suggestions how to make myself a little more welcome by them? ------------------ "how much can you really know about yourself if you've never been in a fight?" There isnt much you can do really. Unless you "look" like you know what your talking about, youll need to just build up a rep as someone who knows... it sucks, but its the way things are? My friends mom is a nutritionist, she weighs about 350lbs., she has all the education and credentials she needs, but who the hell would take her advice on nutrition? Once you have people getting results, youre credibility will grow. Thats all you can really do... ------------------

Screw the little "shithead wife beaters". If they fuck up their back doing whatever, who cares. They're dumb asses and I have no sympathy for those kind of people. They know everything and you can't tell them shit so why bother. Besides, you're not going to make any money off of them and they would be nothing but a pain-in-the-ass for clients. I've been training clients for 4 years, yes size and looks do matter, but so does my education in the field in addition to the results that my clients achieve in comparison to the other trainers. In fact, my clients' achievements is my best source of advertising. If you're good at what you do, you'll have more clients than you know what to do with. If your job is to babysit assholes, then find another job, perhaps in a corporate fitness facility. F1

heh heh heh... corporate fitness facility. Good one... Yeah, fuck those idiots, though. Some people know that they cant judge a book by its cover (as the saying goes). Look at Will Brink! Hes a pencil necked geek, but he knows his shit! Oh, and Ducchaine, he was not a large man by any means, but he was seen as "The Guru". ------------------

Well put fellas. As a former fitness trainer I can tell you that your physique, in combination with your clients getting results is all the calling card you'll need. Let the dumbasses be dumbasses and move on. Unfortunately for me most of my clientelle were corperate fitness folks and a few people who had the money to build their own state of the art facility on the "west 40" of their estates. NOT FUN. Make sure you know who you want your clients to be and make that clear from the begining. Yes the money was good but the boredom and blase attitude of those clients was not worth it. Brotha Silvio - I have to tell you that to be unsure of one's self in a new position is quite common whether you are a young individual "just starting out" or a woman who is trying to re-enter the workforce after spending the better part of the last decade handling human waste and listening to Barney ad nauseam. I also realize how these pressures are seemingly compounded by external appearances. After all even though many people say they want to feel better, let's be honest they are more after how they LOOK. The fact that you are young does not mean that you are void of the knowledge that is necessary to help your clients accomplish their fitness goals. The fact that you are not "swelled up like a tick" does not hinder your ability to perform quite successfully, either. Actually, the vast majority of people (I'm talking John and Ethel Q Public, here which will probably be your bread and butter.) feel intimidated by people who posess physiques that are well beyond the realm of attainable for most. As for those wife-beater wearin' asswipes, they only feel the need to stair you down 'cause THEY are insecure; not sayin' this to make you feel better, just stating FACT. Hope this helps. ------------------
