Clinical pharmacology:
Oxandrolone (17 alfa-methyl-17beta-hydroxy-2oxa-5alfa-androstan-3one) is a class of biologically active steroids in wich the 2 carbon in ring. A of the steroid has been replaced by oxigen. After administration of single oral dose (10 mg containing 20 UCi of C in ethanolic solution), the peak concentration of C-oxandrolone in the plasma was 417 (mean) ug per milliter at 0.5 hour and from 4.0 to 48 hours with a hlaf-life of 9.4hours. The ingested was eliminated predominantly by urinary excretion. In the urine, 43.6% of the administer was excreted in 24 hours and 60.4% in 96 hours. Recovery of C in the feces was only 2.8% of the dose. Oxandrolone causes a strong strength gain, by stimulating the phosphocreatine synthesis in the muscle cell without depositing liquid (water) in the joints ant the mucles. This compound does not aromtize in any dosage, a certain part of the testosterone present in the body is converted into estrogen. Oxalandrone is one of the few steroids wich cannot aromatize to estrogen. Oxalandrone even in a very high dosage does not influence the body�s own testoesterone production (oxandrolone does not suppress the body�s own hormone production).

Indications:
As adjunctive therapy to promote weight gain after weight loss following extensive surgery, cronic infections, or severe trauma, and in some patients who without definite pathophysiologic reasons fail to gain or to maintain normal weight.
Contraindications/Precautions:
"Oxandrolone 2.5 mg" is contraindicated in patients with know hypersensitivity to the drug. It should be used with caution in patients with renal, cardiac or hepatic dysfunction.

Adverse/Effects/Warnings:
Side effects of anabolic steroids in humans include breast enlargement, acne, prostate/urinarytract infections, abnormal hair growth, excessive frequency and duration of erections, fluid or salt retention, nausea, and allergic reactions. While these side effects may also be associated with oxandrolone, they are less frequently than with testosterone and other non-synthetic anabolic agents.
