I guess Accutane (isotretinon I think) is being recalled by the FDA! A pharmacist friend of mine told me a while ago when I picked up some "grey market" prescriptions. She said the FDA has reported so many incidents of birth defects from women taking accutane during the period of pregnancy before they actually realize they are late and get tested. The stuff is just so strong that even that short period of exposure of the fetus to it causes birth defects and spontaneous abortion... thought Id let ya all know... ------------------

Well, its not like it magically disappears from pharmacies once the FDA says some kind of magic word... its a slow drawn out process. Plus, I didnt ask here where they were at in the recall process. It could be months realistically, before its actually taken away from consumers...

yes but that doesn't mean that it's bad for you. I've taken it. It's only if you're planning on getting pregnant when you're taking the drug that birth defects will occur. Haven't heard of it being recalled. quote:

Who said it was bad for you? I was merely stating that the FDA is taking steps to recall it due to the problems it has caused. All of them in pregnant women... Hell yeah its effective, and to me men should still be able to use it. But I was merely throwiing out an informational tidbit, not making a judgement or anything. I think the manufacturers web site has details (I wa told, I havent checked yet...)

This type of information is good to know. I think it's good we have this board to post informative issues such as this.... I've never take Accutane but heard it works wonders. If it's effects are so strong on a fetus (or mother), wonder if it has harmful effects to men who take it? ------------------

Ive never seen any evidence that it is harmful to men. That makes me question the removal of it from the market! Mabye it should just not be prescribed to women? I dont know... It isnt harmful to women or men per se. Just to the undeveloped fetus due to it being able to beat the first pass of the liver. It isnt filtered out, and it runs through the fetal system. As far as sides for a normal healthy adult, they are mostly ones to be expected from a drug that dries the subbaceous glands. Most doctors want you to under go monthly liver screening while on it as it is liver toxic (like a 17aa AS). |
