Okay ladies and gents...I've just started a new split incorporating this machine (after sldl's) and I'm feeling in my calves on the curl upwards. Is this normal or am I using incorrect form? ------------------

Happens now and then, wife has experienced this. Are you pointing your toes? Or keeping them bent? If you can point them. ------------------ Lobo

The machine probably "rolls" onto your ankles. Is it the kind you lay face down on? I get the same feeling with those. If your Gym has one I prefer the standing leg curl machine or the seated both seem to stress the hams much better.

It the lying one and yes it rolls and I had my feet flexed. I'll try the seated one next week and see if that isolates them better. Thanks! ------------------

I was told to do seated hamstring curls sitting up (as opposed to slightly reclined as the machine is designed). I find this isolates my hams and I get an awesome pump. My hubby and a friend claimed that this position hurt their lower backs. I have had no probs like this. I'm no expert in physiology here so give it a shot and if it hurts, don't do it! Any input on this from the experts?

Definitely try to point your toes instead of flex. And also get someone to watch you do this exercise. You want your toes in the middle, as opposed to pointing outward or inward. Got that? Pointed and dead straight should alleviate the prob.

Thanks MS - yes I seem to have gotten myself a training partner...I'll have her watch me closely next time we do them. ------------------

Ohhhh, I should have read this before I questioned you on ICQ... that is THE way to train hams! SLDL are the perfect lead in the leg curls. But, yeah, youre just involving the lower leg in the movement some. Its no biggie, try pointing your toes, or holding them straight very firmly... Im off for a squat-a-thon now... a little German Volume Training to punish myself...

yeah! when you dorsiflex, you use your calves as an assistor to the hamstrings. I'll disagree with MS here a bit though (and I never do that). The idea is to concentrate all of your energy into the target muscles ....which means that everything else needs to be relaxed. In that light, I'd say that your feet should be relaxed and positioned in whatever natural position they fall into. Now your hips and knees on the other hand is another story. How you position/rotate at the hips and knees makes a difference in how you develop the muscle group. ------------------

You're actually agreeing with me on this one JayeLynn. The reason I tell beginners to 'point' their toes is to help them overcome the overwhelming tendency to flex them if their not thinking about it. I find that after just a couple of reps, most beginners naturally relax their foot position even though they think they're still pointing. The net result (which is what we're really after) is a more neutral position.

Okay legs are tonight...lets see if I can remember all the pointers...point the toes first to get the right position, eventually I will find a more neutral relaxed position. Make sure feet are straight - not pointing out or in, make sure body position is relaxed on the board, concentrating on the ham's pulling up the weight. Sheesh.... MS check your mail... ------------------

Okay well I went to battle with the lying leg curl machine last night...bottom line, I hate it. Tried the seated ham curl, works much better for me, I isolate the hammys better sooooo...I'm listening to my body and doing what feels good and where I can work the hardest. Maybe when the ham's get stronger I'll do better with the lying one...thanks again for all the great info! ------------------ |
