My sex drive has departed and I need help! Now, before you start rambling on about the state of my relationship with my husband let me tell you that the relationship is FINE. No, I am not in denial about some underlying issues, I love him and I am attracted to him but something is happening as I get older and I DON'T LIKE IT! It started with a couple of years on prozac which fixed everything else that was wrong but killed my sex drive, I am off the prozac but the sex drive hasn't returned. I have an incredible amount of work related stress as I am always on short deadlines and am really tired from training. I do feel that it is a physical thing not a mental thing and could have something to do with my age (37), also am on birth control pills. Has anyone experienced this and is there anything that will help? I've heard that yohimbe works - does anyone know?

Temple,
I am sorry to hear this yet have to ask if you have had you hormone levels cked? Sometimes the anterior lobe of your pituitary gland can act up causing a major slow down in the production of essential hormones you need for a healthy sex drive.
This is only one of many things which could be causing your problem. Stress can play a major role in sexual problems too. If it were me I would take a trip to the doc to rule out any physical problems first then go from there.

No, I haven't had that done but it is probably a good idea as my periods have always been very regular and consistent and in the last year have been everything from no period to very heavy.

You don't mention how long you've been off Prozac. But you know that's what killed it. My wife and I were on it a few years ago and we were down to once every other month. It took us almost a full year just to get back to twice a month.
My next suggestion is going to sound off the wall but you should try viagra. It will really help you if you keep your doseage to 25mg or less. Otherwise you'll get a head rush that breaks the moment so to speak. Trust me here you'll like it.

Temple: try to get a medical text out and check under "acquired or psycogenic hypothalamic hypogonadism". I'd blame the stress, and the best remedy is to ignore it, and/or stand up to it directly and deal with it. Easier said than done. Been there, and that bit about irregular menses fits things to a 'T'. Another fine option would be to find a chest of jewels or winning lottery ticket. Then hire a decent cook and personal assistant/butler to field the telephone calls, and organise a small staff of household help to turn the house into a sanctuary. Ignore the cellphone and return the pager. Don't drive yourself into the ground. Did you see the thread by Monster entitled "ladies, please read (please, please, please)" on Aug 14? Da Bomb has the right idea concerning proper rest and decent sleep. I'd go as far as to say stop cardio (in favour of sleep) and be gentle to yourself until things are more peaceful. Wishing you well soon.

Tnheygirl: thank you. It is good to know I am not the only one who's had difficulties with a miscalibrated anterior pituitary. I've been in for skull CT, MRI and ultrasound scans -almost the works. I was always clock-regular until college and the resulting allnighters and financial pressures. I would agree wholeheartedly that it is stress that causes the entire problem.

And although Viagra is a surely a splendidly worthwhile medication in it's own right, it just doesn't substitute for peace of mind, posh surroundings, catered meals, and vulgar amounts of cash in secure offshore bank accounts. Maybe the doctor will give you some trial Viagra for free? Don't expect much from it. Maybe consider switching the Prozac for Trazadone? Don't use both of those neuroleptics at the same time.

This is a post which I've been trying to put together myself lately, but from your husbands point of view. My wife was put on prozac almost 1 year ago, and although it worked wonder's for everything which was messed up in her life it has killed her sex drive. it's gone completely, and although I try to be understanding about it it's very hard. I'd appricate it if you could keep us posted here as to how you get on with any 'cure' you come accross. My wife knows that the problem is the prozac but she's terrified to come off it because of her past medical history. All the best, and like I said please keep us posted.

Thats a bitch bouncer, and its common in selective seretonin reuptake inhibitor medicine (and MOA inhibitos, too). Have you tried talking to her doctor about it? Its a condition they may be able to treat for her, or mabye switch her to an MAO inhibitor instead? Different people react in different ways to MAO's and SSRI's... it may be a viable option.

Temple: It is almost definatly hormonal. Ive heard a lot of great things about Yohimbe for women, if I were you Id give it a try. As woman get older (37 is not by any means an age that should be considered any where near "getting older" but for the sake of argument we'll go with that term) their testosterone to estrogen levels start to lean in favor of estrogen ( a "last hurrah" before the hormonal ass whipping of menopause, not that this indicates menopause is near. The hormonal balance shifts around 30yrs. old in most women, my mother is 54 and hasnt gone through menopause yet).
Having your testosterone level drop affects sex drive, testosterone is the "horny hormone", so less of it results in less sex drive.
Another option is DHEA. Ive never had much faith in it, but some women said they had good results.
With Yohimbe, make sure you get the more expensive brands. The cheaper brands are less effective and are basically "watered down". Spending $25 on something that works great is better than spending $12.50 on something that doesnt and being back at square one.
I hope that helps some...

Thanks for the sentiments Monster. I was telling my wife about this thread earlier and she's asked me to keep her posted on the replies. I don't have the interneet at home as I have free internet access in work, yippeeeee!!,lol.
Thats interesting what you said about the dhea, I never thought about it myself. I briefly considered steroids but not in a serious way. However a weak testo booster probably would'nt cause any problems for a woman. All the best, and thanks again.

For muscle gains, Ive heard of women using the weakest, crappiest andro products and getting nice results. Since their system is normally not testosterone rich, any little bit goes a long way!

OH I will give you my .02 cents too.
I've been taking Yohimbe since May. At first it made me feel a little funny, so I decreased my dosage. Now I am up to about 1 pill a day. It took awhile for my system to get use to it... I didn't notice anything at first, except when I had sex, it felt much better. Now about 2 weeks ago, I added some DHEA, and my sex drive has gone way up!!That means I want it now!!!
I am just wondering about the DHEA though.
Is it going to increase my estrogen leavels in my body??? And for a man does it increase his estrogen level also??
I hope this helps Temple, give it a try!!!

YOHIMBE AND DHEA WORKS GREAT FOR NOT ONLY SEX DRIVE BUT SEEMS TO HELP A VARIETY OF AGE RELATES CONDITIONS.
IT SEEMS TO SLOW DOWN THE OLD BIOLOGICIAL CLOCK.
IT WILL ALSO HELP IN YOUR QUEST FOR THAT BETTER BODY!!!

IN PLACE OF PROZAC MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD GREAT RESULTS WITH ST-JOHN'S WART AND SAM-E.
THESE TWO COMPOUNDS ARE GREAT POST-CYCLE, WHEN COMING OFF A.S. TO HELP FIGHT THE BLUES ONE OFTEN GETS.
