I am going to get my mom on the right track to help her meet her fitness goals. I've already had great help via e-mail from bikinimom (thanks again!!!), but I was wondering if I could get some help with determining a daily caloric intake from this board.

My mom's about 165lbs 5'2"... I want to just work on getting her to see results at first and not setting a particular numerical goal. What would you recommend for a daily caloric intake and how should the calories be distributed between protein, fat, and carbs? How about meal content... more carbs earlier on and virtually none around dinner time, or equal distributions of everything throughout the day?

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

40/40/20 is always a safe starter for most beople just begining. Ive had a lot of luck with people on that formula. Basic precontest dieting doesnt really apply to someone with an average amount of body fat, so you want to go with a more "traditional" diet. Fiborous carbs over starchy, little to no sugar (preferable none). Never go below 1800 calories or you risk metabloic slowdown.
Most people can eat the same amount of calories they usually do, but have them come from healthy choices, and see results! Good Luck!

Good advice, Monster. I helped my grandmother to lose weight and did exactly that--40/40/20. I think it is better to embark them on a sensible diet with enough calories to not think that this is an impossible lifestyle. This is something that you want them to stay with for the long haul. After a while she'll be looking for healthy recipes herself.

Also when first starting out she'll need TONS of encouragement but I am sure if you care enough to help you are already doing that.

The information was very helpful. Thank you Monster and riptchick... I have one more question though.

If she will be eating 40/40/20... then I'm confused as to how many total calories to try for each day. Assuming I do 1g protein per pound bodyweight, that would come out to 160... 160 x 4 cals = 640 cals. 640/.40 = 1600, but you said to not go below 1,800. Did you mean 1,200 (I've heard elsewhere that 1,200 is the magic metabolic slowdown number) or did you mean 1,800?
