Here is question for WarLobo, or MS, IronGod...

Why is it that the food pyramid on everything still reads like this:

use sparingly: oils, fats, sugars
2 to 3 servings a day: dairy and protein foods

2 to 4 servings a day: fruits
3 to 5 servings: veggies
then 6 TO 11 SERVINGS: GRAINS, BREADS, PASTAS !
This to me is totaly backwards, why is this like this ? It hasnt changed in years, decades really, and we no longer eat this way.

no, actually there is an article in this month's issue of SELF magazine and they say by using this pyramid you can be on the PERFECT DIET! Yeah Right!

Why don't they change this already?

Its called big business running the gov't - the meat/dairy industry freaked out when they changed it from the 4 food groups. Do you remember that?? It will be years before its changed again...

My children are now being taught that garbage in school! I tell them they have to learn the BS answers because I don't want them to fail their tests, but then I reiterate THE TRUTH. If they get confused by this conflicting information as GROWN-UPS do I simply ask them how their teachers look. They usually don't get a chance to answer. Then I flex my abs or quads or bicep (you get the idea) and ask, "Does your teacher look like this?" and continue on to say, "Do your classmates mommy's OR daddy's look like this?" (There is ONE exception to this answer and that is the amazing Fran G my personal guru and inspiration from the Mill - she also happens to be a mommy at the same school.) The answer of course is, "NO!" I then say, "When you have a teacher who has bigger muscles and is in better shape than mommy and she teaches you that the food pyramid is correct, then I will shut my mouth."

I try to teach my girls that there is no such thing as a good food or a bad food (except of course maybe breakfast cereal or cheese curls - I don't think those really qualify as "food" at all) but only good and bad choices. If you eat a ton of candy, your stomach will hurt, your teeth will rot and you will not grow healthy and strong.

I don't want them to ever get sucked into that whole food is evil and my identity is wrapped up in a number on the scale.

On this topic IN PARTICULAR I could go on and on forever as it is a passion of mine. (Not that I couldn't go on forever about practically everything - Hey, where's the soap truck?)

The gov't is responsible because they are controlled by big business and the media is responsible for taking the lie to level 2 or should I say DEFCON 4. The news is always screaming out headlines about staying tuned for some new magic pill or cream. The infomercials selling all these exercise machines and they never mention a thing about diet. The stupid women's magazines that prey on women's phobias. Got cottage cheese thighs?? Read here for secret cure. I read this crap when I'm waiting in line at the grocery store for the comedy effect. Women buy this shit??? Most of it is to sell mags, but I sometimes wonder if they don't tell the truth just cuz the public doesn't want to hear the truth. The cure has already been discovered by fitness enthusiasts all over the world and they are not following the govt's recommendation for a healthy diet. This point has already been beaten to death for years and I'm just singing to the choir even talking about it. It's just one of those things we have to grin and bear.

Calm down everyone. Or did I miss something. The only criticism I can make of that pyramid is that they don't specify FRESH fruits and vegetables, and don't mention WHOLE grain foods, including legumes and pulses. This is a shame because this was the wording used in the joint recommendations of the AHA and Cancer Society of America, and was based on the largest collection of demographic and health data you'll ever see! If everyone ate according to those guidelines, obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer would plummet into the endangered list. It is how I primarily eat most of the time (bulking and maintenance), and is a VAST improvement over the old food pyramid.

I guess I take exception to the statement that 'we no longer eat this way'. I know very few people who ever ate this well for a consistent period of time.
