I started to get a little edgey on the TnHeygirl post so I decided to post a topic on why we all train to maybe shed some light on personalities, motivation etc. Personally, I train because I grew up around it. My grandfather and Norm Shemanski trained together for the Olympics before I was born. Then, I was into gymnastics but grew a little too tall to be competitive there (I'm about 5'9"). I got fat after my second son and saw the difference on how people treated me. Now, I truly love the way muscles look--nothing sexier and its amazing how addicting it is. The bigger you get the bigger you wanna be. [This message has been edited by riptchick (edited July 18, 2000).] IP: Logged |

I'm a reformed 'get thin until you die' gal. When you train in dance, the more bone you can see the better. My body type is more muscular so you can imagine what I did to myself....lets just say I was pretty screwed up. When I stopped dancing, I became and aerobic-holic...still starving etc....then about 7 yrs ago I picked up a couple of 5lb weights...loved it even then but still didn't know about training heavier, eating right any of that so I kept trying everything, but now with light weights in the mix. Fat, thin, fat, thin - always in somewhat good shape, but never really happy with myself. Sometime last winter I started to get a handle on eating better...it was starting to sink in that I really needed to eat more to be healthy...that and I was JUST FRIGGIN TIRED of having cellulite on my ass!! So I started pulling out the weights again this year...went heavier and heavier until someone directed me to a site on line that helped set up a program of lifting for you. Well what can I say but I got hooked...couldn't believe how strong I was (am getting I should say) and how my body RESPONDS to the training. It LOVES it!! WHY did I wait so long!!??? As luck would have it, I met up with a regular poster here on Elite through the other site and he drug me over here. (Thank you Mr M) So HERE I AM SISTER...totally addicted...heck I'm even ready to get back into to gym (I workout at home now), choking down protein shakes, eating all kinds of meals at all times of the day...sweating, grunting, hobbling around in pain. And you know what...my ass is looking pretty damn fine too! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have been athletic all my life, but when I went to Australia for 2 months and hiked, climbed, went scuba diving everyday, I came back to the U.S. very fit and I didn't want to lose that feeling. Joined my first gym 9 years ago and found that my body responded to training very well. Didnt really start working out hard until I met my boyfriend who is a big muscular hottie, and he spent some time with writing out a routine for me at the gym, I took that first workout and ran with it, now Im more of a "gym rat" than he is. Working out is by far my favorite part of the day IP: Logged |

I was a big lump on a log and getting worse everyday. I hardly ever ate, when i did it was crap. and, i was getting really fat. On Dec. 18,1998, I was in a car accident where I fell asleep and smashed into a tree . I was on my way to work at 3:30 am(I work 4am-2pm) 1month earlier I had filed bancrupcy and had lost alot of self respect for myself. I was off of work for 3weeks and through this time I reflected on my life. I realized I was going nowhere fast and I had better change even faster. I did! After that point everything has been better. I dieted down by eating frequently, like 6, 7x daily. But only good foods. I walked 5miles a day, and after reading about weight training and how it could make you lose fat I was exstatic!! I went out the next day and bought some free weights. I really like the way that I have changed my body but I never realized what a hold it has taken on the rest of my life too. People approach me often and ask what do I do to look so healthy(I work at the local gas station). I like telling people that I lift because they always say"You lift weights?" like its a strange thing to them. Anyway, thats what made me start lifting. IP: Logged |

Well...about 6 1/2 years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I became anorexic...I was depressed. It was like a total change in my personality. I lost myself, I guess you could say. Anyhow, I became obsessed with jogging and doing abs, and I did the Cindy Crawford workout tapes at home (which kicked my scrawny ass). As my anorexia progresed, I got down to 89 pounds and convinced mom to let me join a gym...so I could really workout and lose more weight (but I didn't let anyone know that's why I wanted to join). Well, after several blackouts in the tanning bed, and feeling really dizzy after workouts, and seeing myself in the mirror in a tank top and being disgusted cause I was so thin...I decided to take control of my health and from that point on, I became a workout nut, in a more positive way! I swore that I would look like the fitness competitors and gain muscle, and compete someday. I also found my career as a personal trainer. Working out is truly a life-saver! As I got more into my workouts, I shifted to a bodybuilder-type routine and gained quality weight, and didn't feel guilty about eating! I had to EAT!!! I don't know what I would be doing had I not found this passion! It's still a struggle with the body image and eating stuff, but that's to be expected. Only the strong survive! GREAT question! ------------------ IP: Logged |

UMM, LET JUST SAY IT HAS BEEN A FOREVER ROLLERCOASTER WITH ME AND LOSING WEIGHT! WELL, I DECIDED TO FINALLY START WORKING OUT & LIFTING BECAUSE AFTER TAKING SO MANY DIET PILLS AND STARVING MYSELF FOR SO DAMN LONG, I LOST SO MUCH MUSCLE THAT I ACTUALLY LOOKED WORSE THAN BEING 158 LBS. MY SKIN WAS JUST HANGING THERE WITH NOTHING UNDERNEATH IT, BUT FLAB!(SKINNY FAT GIRL)AND THAT WAS AT 127 LBS. SO, HERE I AM NOW WORKING OUT DAILY WHETHER IT BE LIFTING OR CARDIO I AM AT THE GYM EVERY MORNING 5 DAYS A WEEK. I HAVE TO LOVE MYSELF BEFORE ANYONE ELSE WILL LOVE ME! ------------------ IP: Logged |

My husband and I work out together....I motivate him, he motivates me! Also, this is good quality time for us to spend together. We're each other's best friend! First, I decided to do it for myself, and I met my husband (of almost 2 yrs.) at the gym! ------------------ IP: Logged |

I started working out because as a 14 year old girl and 5'9", 190+ pounds you'd better be an athlete. I excelled in all sports basketball, softball, diving, volleyball, I even tried to play high school football but my Mom refused to let me even try out. Needless to say as a disgrunteled teen I found drugs and alcohol and a new way of life. When I finally came to, 9 years later, athletics helped me keep a clear head and use up all that energy. I joined the Army and used all my spare time pumping iron and running. I got back into competitive sports basketball, bodybuilding, and powerlifting. Now I'm a whole new person. Not a day goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars that I got a second chance at life. WW IP: Logged |
