![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Okay so I got my rear online, in the mags and finally to the store and sorted out what I should be taking & when it the vit/min dept. My question is this: I purchased potassium gluconate that is a 550mg supplement but only has 90mg of "true" potassium - the gluconate delivers the rest. Is my body going to get the same thing out of the gluconate as it is the true potassium? The pharmacist at the store said yes, and also that I would not be able to find a stronger potassium ratio OTC. Is that correct and should this supplement do the job for me? ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I can't comment on OTC stuff in the US. But 90 mgs of potassium is 90 mgs, no matter what it's chelated to. They do this to slow down the absorption of potassium. This is for your own protection because too much in one hit can give you a heart attack. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In the US, the FDA restricts the amount of potassium available in OTC supplements to 99mg per dose. So, no matter what type you buy, it will only have that amount in it. Like MS, says, it's for your protection so you don't throw off your heart rhythm. Potassium is unique in that the body absorbs potassium that occurs naturally in foods better than a pill supplement. Yams are a good source for BBs. I do not take a separate potassium supplement unless I am manipulating my water balance for contest preparation. You have to be careful and know what you are doing or you can throw off your electrolytes. I take a decent multi-mineral capsule and an ionic mineral formula and that covers my potassium needs. This should be sufficient for your potassium unless you are using diuretics or other drugs that deplete potassium. ------------------ IP: Logged |
