![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My husband is just getting back into training after a 12 vacation. Two weeks after his return to the gym he developed a really ugly infection in his elbow - started out as a small scratch that had healed over, turned into a sack of fluid the size of a baseball and then his arm from mid bicep to mid forearm swelled to twice normal size, high fever - the whole bit. After a very aggressive series of antibiotics it seems to be under control and the swelling, pain and redness is almost gone. Will this arm be more prone to injury and if so for how long. Also, how long should he wait before hitting the gym again? He has three days of oral antibiotics left. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() until the doc says the infection is totally gone. Sounds like a staph infection. Did he catch himself on some rusty metal? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It was metal - don't know if it was rusty or not. He was putting nerf bars on our new truck - was really a small scratch. It took the doctors here two days to decide that it was infected - the first diagnosis was a pulled ligament in the elbow. Finally had a friend who is an RN look at it and she said "Jesus Christ get this boy to another doctor!" Don't really trust them to be the ones to give the okay to start training again as they could all double as aerobics instructors if you know what I mean - they know one subject...cardio...cardio...cardio. They didn't even schedule a follow up visit for him to make sure that the infection was cleared up. We are going to check on a refill on the antibiotic as it is still a little red and tender. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() staph infections are really easy to get on dirty or rusty metal. Did they give him a tetanus shot? If not, get one. The reason I say wait is because flexion/extension can squeeze infected pus like a zit..and that "leak" can cause a new infection. In your husbands case, it obviously seeped into the subdermis..and could still be lurking there. The next step could have been a ulceration where the skin rots and a "sink hole" develops. I'm a PT, AT-C and those suck to treat. You have to leave the wound wide open and irragate the sucker until the infection ends. "The man-eating disease" is nasty to look at and staph is the cause. Just make sure the infection is totally gone for good. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Will it be more susceptible to injury even after the infection is cleared up? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() No..once the infection is gone...it's gone. That's why people need tetanus shots every 12 to 18 months..you never know. A little simple scratch turned into a nightmare IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is pretty scary - you always hear of these infections happening to other people. He just started round two of antibiotics. I was surprised that you needed your tetanus updated that often - thought they were good for like 10 years. IP: Logged |
