LASIX: (furosemide) 20mg or 40mg/tab

This is a very strong diuretic. Bodybuilders often use this drug to shed water in an attempt to attain greater definition in the muscles. Lasix acts very quickly; when taken orally its entire effect can be over in as little as two hours. Some athletes like this immediate effect because it allows them to judge their "new look" quickly and determine if they are too flat, or still not cut enough. Depending on their judgment, they might take an additional dose of the drug, or ingest more water to make up for over depletion. Some athletes claim they avoid serious cramping and other side effects associated with the use of this drug by supplementing extra mineral and potassium salts. This practice, although often effective, can be extremely dangerous. When self-administering diuretics and potassium salts, an extreme imbalance could result in heart failure. Fortunately most athletes who use Lasix do so only for a day or two before their competition. Dosages seen were around 40mg a day. This drug should be used under the care of a physician. It usually does not show up on the market, but is available at a very low price by prescription.

Isn't lasix prescribed for long term use always prescribed with potassium? I have taken care of two grandparents that had congestive heart failure for which lasix was prescribed and it always came with one for potassium. My understanding is that it strips the potassium from the system and that too much or too little potassium can cause heart related problems and possibly death, hence the need for the supervision of a physician. I have also seen what can happen with long term use of this drug and IT IS NOTHING TO TAKE LIGHTLY. Also, doesnt' this drug have a rebound effect when use is discontiuned?

the danger is that the potassium screws with your cell hydration levels by drawing away sodium from the "sodium/potassium pump".

Most elderly people do not rehydrate themselves after all the urinating Lasix can cause.

My grandfather developed blood clots that had to be surgically bypassed. Thanks to my idiot relatives who told him "peeing a lot? Quit drinking so much fluid...and cut out your salts".

The herbal dandelion is just as potent

I do get the cramping sometimes that you have mentioned never knew why I got the cramps and now I do thanks.

wow, that is shocking....lasix is normally reserved for some type of medical condition, ie: kidney problems, etc....

Amen FC. That is some of the most negligent prescribing I've heard in a long time.

I would stongly suggest you not take it. There is no solid reason for you to be on this. It is far to risky for the small benifits you might never really see.

Anyone else think D should get off this stuff??

I'm gonna fourth or fifth this motion, WL. D, Lasix is one strong drug. You could ask Momo Beniziza about it if he were alive. (I know you aren't doing those amounts but still a story I will never forget). Your doctor is an IDIOT! (Not a flame to you at all Dlady)

I absolutely agree that she should STOP taking it but I am wondering if she may have some difficulty doing so - I seem to remember reading somewhere that you can form a dependence to diuretics in that when you stop taking them you will retain ALOT of water - does anyone know if this is true. If she has been using these for a long time has she created a chronic water retention problem for herself?

I am a bodybuilder who has been taking Lasix or the generic version for several years because I have an artificial heart valve. The purpose is to keep fluids away from my heart and lungs. I recently stopped taking it for two days and ended up with congestive heart failure! And here I am trying to get ready for a contest! Hasn't stopped me much at all. But seriously, this is a very dangerous drug and while some bodybuilders may WANT to take it, I HAVE to and it's a pain, to say the least. But yes, the lean and ripped look is a nice side effect. Although probably not a healthy one.

Dlady, if you stop taking it you will get rebound water retention, but it will only be temporary. Just flush your body with water (gallons), don't touch any food with sodium in it, and the bloating should pass in a week or two. Hardgirl-don't stop taking lasix!!!!

Isn't that why Aldactone is the diuretic of choice? Since it is potassium sparing. I have some Aldactone I plan on taking near competition time but I am also concerned about its anti-androgen effects. I figure if it is kept to no more than 4-5 days, that should not be a problem (for males, that is) what do you think?

...and YES, D needs to get off of that now. Whatever the medical condition you have, there are PLENTY of ways to rememdy it besides Lasix.

I have no medical conditions at all, in great health. And I did quit taking them, started drinking more water and go to the bathroom like crazy still.
