I am having a brain fart here so can someone help me understand this....

One of my friends decided to take out all of the starchy carbs and breads and such out of her diet about a month ago, if even that long and has lost over 15 lbs. And all she does besides that is 30 mins of cardio a day!

Now how is that possible when here I am busting my ass to lose fat and exercise everyday and watch my diet, I have not lost a pound in 2 months, just more firm now. How could she have done this like she said she has??? And does that actually work sometimes????

How much of her weight loss was fat and how much of it was muscle?

I don't know you so I can't be sure, but perhaps you gained muscle while losing fat and in turn stayed the same weight?

Dlady,

The weight your girlfriend lost was mostly water and the fact that her glycogen stores are depleted as soon as she starts eating normal (complex carbs) again her body will bloat up. To lose 15lbs in a month by just removing complex carbs she must be heavy or already holding alot of water.Just stick to a good diet and keep up your weight training the results will be much better.

Depends on what your goal is.. you want to be rail thin and weak or you want to have some mass and be strong and lean? Muscle weighs more :-). Dont pay so much attention to the scale, look at your body in the mirror. Do you like what you see? Do you feel healthy and strong? Anyway, in my opinion, skinny fat (oxymoron, I know) women don't look nearly as good as firm, defined women that have some weight on 'em. But then again Im biased, Im not in the skinny category nor do I wish to be.
Ask Bikinimom.. she weighs more now than she did when she had much more fat. And see how great she looks!

Do you think that by me upping my cardio to 60 mins will help me see better results, when it comes to slimming my waist line?
It is a 28 now and I want it to go down a few more inches...

All of the cards that I eat are in the morning before noontime, like the oatmeal and a sweet potato with my lunch.

Yeah but how does it look? Do you have abbs at 28 inches? I saw your pics and you naturally have a thick midsection you should try building up your legs and upper body (Shoulders,Pecs). This would dramtically improve your symetry. Cardio won't do this only weight training.

I hope you can understand this IG. My stomach has the definition of my abs there, but like someone said before, it is stuck under a layer of fatty shit and I am hating it right now. My upper abs are great, except for that layer of shit there on top. How can I get rid of this????

I want to get a belly ring soon, (Friday) but not while I have this stomach.

I am doing now, leg lifts, 6 inches, crunches, and knee lifts for my abs...

Dlady - everyones body is different. My waist is 27" and I have great abs (if I don't say so myself ) I can't get a navel ring because there is not enough fat on me. Just as you shouldn't hang your life on the scale, it should not hang on measurements either. You are doing wonderfully in your training and nutrition and you WILL see results. Muscle weighs more, muscle weighs more, muscle weighs more...it can't be said enough. You said yourself that you are firmer and thats where you are trying to go.

On the carbs - personally flour products just don't feel that good in my systems so I eat the starchy tubers and some whole grain things here and there. I've even had a bit of pasta a few times this week.

IG is right about the water weight - it is the first to go when you cut carbs - be it sugar, flour, rice, potatoes etc...

Hang in there gf - change takes time. Think of how long you have been trying to do something one way and now you are totally changing around your thinking. You want to be a muscle goddess - not a bean pole!

Dlady - take a deep breath and count to 10.

Listen to what IronGod and the rest are telling you. They are not talking shit.

I know we all want it now. Don't worry so much about being ripped to shreds, that isn't the primary goal here. Take your time, keep plugging away - eat right, build mass. As your muscles grow they will be able to burn more calories while you sleep! Increasing cardio is not the answer. BUILD MASS - MASS WEIGHS MORE - GET OFF THE SCALE - IT IS EVIL!!!! I weigh 125# at 5'5" at @ 18%bf. I am gradually cleaning up my diet (sort of a pre pre-contest diet). I don't want to cut my carbs too soon because then I will sacrifice all of the mass I have busted MY ASS to gain in the last few months and certainly will gain no more by competition day!!!! It is still psychologically difficult for me to carry this extra bit of fat but if I don't I will be wasting my time. I'm not now nor will I ever be Cory Everson, but I still want to be the best that I CAN BE when I step out onto stage. It's difficult to make the transition from "skinnychick" to "BRICKSHIT-HOUSE BABE" but it can be done: one day at a time. It may seem that your acquaintance has made this unbelievable gain in a short period of time. What is her secret? Are you ready ...here it is: SHE REALLY AIN'T MADE NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Iron God is 100% correct. As time progresses you, who have done this the proper way - trained hard, eating right will begin to unveil beautiful hard muscle (as the muscles grow - the fat will go - can't grow muscles if you don't eat!!!! OK?! OK!) she, on the other hand, will probably have gone back to eating food (ineveitable if she doesn't die first) and because her metabolism will have slowed because of all the mass she has lost (15# in one month - isn't that impressive?) will unfortunately look and feel worse than she did in the first place. SAD BUT TRUE!

DON'T GIVE UP - WE'RE ALL CHEERING YOU ON!

I will now step off the soapbox.

Dlady27: Fat loss is an overall process. You can't target a certain area. Doing all the situps in the world won't change that - although it's still a very common myth.

Fat loss happens with proper diet. Diet is everything. And it takes time. Stick with it.

Dlady,

Have you ever heard of the angel or demon called genetics? You can't change your overall structure and where your body stores fat nor can you spot reduce those areas ...(but weight training can work wonders), you need to be patient. I have been training for 6 years and constantly find room for change you've been training seriously only 2 months MAYBE more. My only advice to you is stay along your path ask reasonable questions here and try to emulate the commitment some of the people here show, this is a way of life to some of us. You have not been training long enough to expect dramatic results.
Patience Grasshopper !!!!!!!

Ahhh grasshopper. You are wise to ask many questions on this board. We will not intentionally lie to you.

Last competition I did I was trying to get under a weght class without losing muscle. A week before the Saturday competition I carb-depleted my body (much like it seems your friend has done) and dehydrated a little as well for a Friday morning weigh in. I just squeaked into the lower weight class and then started carb-loading. I don't know what I weighed when I stepped on the stage 30 hours later, but by the Monday afternoon I was fully rehydrated and carb-loaded and was 15 lbs heavier than my Friday am weight. The monday weight is what I considered my 'real' weight. The Friday am was an artificial, carb-starved body weight. Just wait until your friend starts eating normally again. Can you spell 'blow-up'?

Stick to your program. Give it at least 3 months before you decide it's not working for you.
