Okay I have the strangest thing happening with my sleep pattern...let me start off by saying I am a morning person and I've done 5am workouts for a long time. But since I've started really concentrating on strength training (4x a week for a good hour)and more intense cardio (3x a week - 45m to an hr) and a good diet, I am waking up without the alarm earlier and earlier even though I am going to bed at the same time. Its weird...this morning I woke up before 4am and couldn't go back to sleep. I just hopped out of bed and was ready to workout, full of energy. But I only got 6 1/2 hrs of sleep! I'm sleeping well but this is strange. I know that sleep is very important for growth and healing. Does anyone have any ideas why this may be happening. I also know valerian root and melatonin are good for sleep - but I'm not really having trouble sleeping. I'm just waking up too early? Any ideas??? IP: Logged |

The same thing has happened to me since I started working out. I set the alarm for 5:30 am , but always seem to wake up now before that time. It must be the internal clock inside of us. IP: Logged |

First off, I hate all you "happy" morning people. Mornings suck. It fricking takes me two hours to get going. But anyway, I don't think your really doing anything detrimental. 6 1/2 is not that bad at all. You may try to go to bed a bit earlier and see how that works. But believe you me, some folks have a terrible problem getting to sleep when they kick it up a notch so be thankful! Late Lobo IP: Logged |

I know the feeling. I usually go through this during dieting periods where I increase the intensity of both aerobic and anaerobic activity. If you are maintaining a decent level of energy during the day and throughout the week then congrats! Keep a close eye on your level of mental clarity and alertness throughout the day. The symptoms you describe are similar to one of the side effects of the dreaded stage of "over training". Especially when you are pushing yourself to a further extreme. Your bodys recovery time is critical. I would normally wake up around 7:30. When I reach a high level of over training I begin to find myself wide-awake around 3:30 - 4:00 am. A much greater discrepancy then what you are experiencing at this stage. Don't let this take the wind from your sails; it's only an element to be conscious of. Otherwise I commend you for stepping up your intensity! IP: Logged |

Thanks Z - I have read that interrupted sleep can be a symptom of over training...I feel pretty good during the day and my recovery time for soreness is really good. So I am keeping an eye on it. I'd hate to think I have to cut back! I normally wake up around 5 or 6 so I'm not too far off the mark, its just strange. I find myself laughing in the morning when I look at the clock! MrM - your going to have to learn how to suck too! IP: Logged |

I'm having a problem w/ sleep as well. I have to get up at 4 am for cardio. That is when I take clen/beta 3...so I'm wired for a few hours. I crash hard around 9 AM and need a pillow at my desk. I'm finding myself totally exhausted at night-around 6 PM after work and after I teach aerobics. I am a single mom-and don't get a lot of rest-that may be a big part of it. I've read tons of stuff about getting 8 hours of sleep. That's a freakin joke! I'm lucky to get 5. Should I mess w/ taking anything to help me sleep? IP: Logged |

Do you mean you have trouble sleeping, or there's not enough hours in the day to get enough sleep? Obviously the latter won't be helped by taking sleeping aids. If it's trouble sleeping, then, in your case at least, it does sound like over-training/physical exhaustion. Sleeping aids may help, but are not a long-term solution to taking on more than you can healthily handle. You may have to consider giving up something (morning cardio OR evening aerobics classes-both sounds like too much). ------------------ IP: Logged |
