I work out at home with a good set of dumbells/barbells so the compound movements with free weights makes up most of my routine. I love 'em, I love the results... IP: Logged |

Wife does the big movments. Squats wide stance and deep. Dead lifts both sumo and traditional. Bent rows, stiff legged deads, and all three bench platforms (flat, incline, and decline). And all kinds of dumbel presses. We will rotate each major life during the month. We do not do sets of each syle of bench on the same day. And we will not do deads on the same day as bent rows. We will often superset. An example would be pull ups followed by pull downs on the machine or even seated rows. This helps keep the heat pumping and the blood flowing. I try to maintain at least a 120 pulse. I time myself and as soon as it drops below I do my next set. We both like the machines for drop sets to burn out on every now and then. It's a good safe way to just kill yourself Late Lobo IP: Logged |

I do a combination of both compound and isolation. The ratio depends on the body part. My abs are all compound: my legs are split 50/50. I also alternate my rotation between the compound and isolation exercises on my legs. Where youre supposed to do the isolation exercises first (leg extensions and curls), I alternate and put them last about every other leg routine. ...gives 'em a wicked burn. Same with the biceps, shoulders and tri's. My back is a bit more difficult: if I do my chins last I typically don't get very far with them. My chest is virtually all compound, but I will throw in an incline pec deck from time to time. IP: Logged |

Compound stuff is the only way to go . The only time I use machines is during rehab for injury, period. Okay, an infrequent tcep pressdown or pulldown/seated row. I bought Bill Pearl's book, "Getting Stronger" and he has any freeweight exercise you can ever imagine, and some you can't. Plenty of variety and even sport specific options. I recommend this book to any and everyone in the iron game. You'll never go back to cybex. Just my humble 'old school' .02 WW IP: Logged |

Now there was a machine out there that I used while on vacation in Hawaii (yes I worked out on vacation :p) I think they were Life Cycle brand. At first I was pissed cause they didn't have much in the way of free weights and what they did have would in no way come close to what I needed - even if I did have a hangover from the night before But now these machines were cool once I figured out the electronics on 'em. You see, you could set the weight at different poundages on the press portion of the movement. Take the bench machine. I set the press pounds to 250 and then set the decline pounds to 300. Good god did that work great. It was like having a partner helping you. You could also set the pace.... Like a four second press and an eight-second decline....It would beep at yas. Sort of annoying at first, but you got into it - BURN BABY BURN. So there is a place for the machine. They can often help if use in context and with free weights being used as the primary lifts. Now if I could just get a local gym to buy them. Late Lobo IP: Logged |
