Luna Bar
Luna - The Whole Nutrition Bar for Women from the makers of the Clif Bar LUNA contains the nutrients you need to maintain a healthy mind and body. Lisa Thomas and Gary Erickson, co-founders of Clif Bar Inc., have a passion for making baked delights that are nutritious as well as delicious. The company's namesake, Clif Bar, has been described by TIME Magazine (1998) as "...the taste standard..." among energy bars. Not content to sit on their Clif Bar laurels, Gary and Lisa created LUNA in response to women friends requesting a bar that "that is delicious... has fewer than 200 calories...and is full of nutrients that Protein is a critical part of your daily diet as it aids in the growth and development of all body tissue. For example, protein is critical for muscle growth and repair. Protein is also needed for the formation of hormones that control many body functions. LUNA contains 10 grams of soy protein. Soy Protein is a remarkable food: it is a source of protein for general nutrition, and includes natural isoflavones. Some authorities have claimed that soy-rich diets help maintain a healthy heart and promote strong bones and breast health. Other potential benefits include maintenance of Calcium is essential for healthy bones and teeth, and for the prevention of osteoporosis. Adequate calcium also reduces the severity of muscle cramping, including menstrual cramping. One LUNA bar contains the equivalent of a 10-ounce glass of milk, 1 cup of yogurt or 2-oz.of cheese. B-Vitamins support proper nerve and brain function, and protein and fat metabolism. B-vitamins are also involved in the conversion of carbohydrates into energy. Folic Acid is a B-vitamin which, according to health experts, contributes to a healthy heart. Folic acid is also critical for women of child-bearing age in order to have healthy babies. Each LUNA Bar contains 100% of the RDI for folic acid. Iron is vital to help prevent anemia, which can cause fatigue and lethargy. It is also needed to regulate body temperature and metabolism. Antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene (a source of Vitamin A), selenium and decaffeinated green tea protect against free radicals. Antioxidants also contribute to a healthy heart, bones, joints and immune system. * Source "VITAMINS, WHY YOU REALLY NEED TO TAKE MORE", Conde Nast WOMENS' SPORT & FITNESS, Joseph Hooper, July 1998. TIME is a trademark owned by The My take on all this is excellent marketing hype, but you'd be better getting a really good multi plus mineral supplements and eating real foods. 10 grams of protein does not make a muscle-building meal replacement, and even two of these bars will only get you 20 grams of protein and 50 grams of carbs. That's OK if you're on the run, but not great day-in day-out nutrition. I also think it's interesting that they don't bother to tell you where all those carbohydrates are coming from. It makes a big difference to how I would rate it as a snack. Lots of sugar, or lots of brown rice? My overall impression of Clif bars in general is that they cater more for the High carb, endurance and weekend warrior type of diet than BB's. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'm with MS on this one. Way too many carbs, and of all the carbohydrate choices out there, I still have yet to see the government post a minimum daily requirement of corn syrup. ...being that they are the authority on such matters and all (oh, that's the other thread) Anyway, if you're going to use bars in your diet, use them for protein. In every case, you can do better to select better fat and carb supplements. Besides, it's not hard to fulfil your fat and carb %'s. IP: Logged |

I can't go past a good old fashioned Promax bar myself. I love the taste and texture, and 21 grams of protein is OK. It's a shame about all the sugar (and the cost) though. I have them as a special treat when I've been very good. But again, not a good meal replacement. IP: Logged |
