I am new to this board and since the first of the year have lost 30# of fat thru a fairly clean diet, cardio and weight training. The more that I read about carbs and weight loss the more paranoid I become about them and am still a bit confused about how they impact fat loss. Is it no starchy carbs at night or no high glycemic carbs at night ex. spaghetti has a fairly low glycemic index. I still have about 20 - 30# to lose. My blood sugar tends to occasionally drop pretty low to the point where I get the shakes and can't think straight and I have horrendous sugar cravings esp. at night which I don't think are related to hormonal fluctuations as I am on the pill. Can someone tell me what I should be doing to get the rest of this fat off? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Congratulations on the progress you've made so far. Fantastic. Let me attempt to answer your question by first saying that there are 1000's of ways to 'diet'. It sounds to me like you've embarked on what I consider the all-round healthiest method which is a hogh protein, medium carb, low-fat diet? If so, then you are better off avoiding ALL processed carbs, including pasta, bread, sugar, etc...This is even more true if you suffer bouts of low blood sugar. The idea behind eating fibrous (veggie) carbs at the end of the day is that they are slow-release carbs that won't affect insulin much, and are less likely to be stored as fat because of this. If your getting sugar cravings, you might need to increase your protein intake and see how that works. You may also just have to bear with it (we all get cravings when we're dieting-that's the character building part of it). Protein every 2-3 hours should control low blood sugar problems. If it doesn't, you should consult a doctor about it. And be sure to get SOME fat in your diet, especially stuff like flaxseed/EPO. Does that answer your questions? ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yes, and thank you. I did the only meat and vegetables for dinner tonight and must say that I feel pretty good, am not having any cravings and really didn't miss the pasta or potatoes. What about carbs like oatmeal and bran flakes eaten earlier in the day as well as whole grain tortillas? I also take the fish oil capsules - are these as good as the flaxseed oil? The rest of my fat intake comes from lean beef - my dad is a rancher and you just can't beat the price. IP: Logged |

Yup, fish oil is good too. Between the fish oil and lean beef, sounds like you'll be getting enough fat. And I'm with Mr. Muscle on the oats, bran flakes, etc... Great foods, just don't overeat them and don't eat them too late in the day if possible. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Speaking of oats and bran.... I've been a bit "blocked up" of late due to all the extra protein. I went and bought that orange fiber stuff and swigged down a big 'ol glass. Good god did it fill my tummy up. Felt like I ate a whole cow. Then, later that afternoon.... well, lets just say the cow came out. It was great. Just some ramblings..... But one thing I got to think would be helpful for you all on diets, is that a glass of this would help give you that full feeling without the calories and even help the 'ol digestive tract Late Lobo IP: Logged |

Hey yeah, I use that stuff (tastes great when you're on a diet) at least twice a week when I'm dieting. It's a nice feeling the next morning when all that backed up stuff rolls on out. ------------------ IP: Logged |

okay, you guys brought it up so....... I have the opposite problem, ever since I started getting in shape my body seems to process food at a really fast rate - what goes in the the morning comes out in the evening and what goes in at night comes out in the morning. It seems to accelerate at about the time that I drop a few pounds...is there a reason for this? Not complaining just curious. Temple IP: Logged |
