I have a girfriend who works out and is interested in living healthy, she admits to one weekness: If she starts on a piece of anything sweet she wants to binge. I suggested a 40-30-30 diet so her carb intake will not be so high as to trigger any type of binge. Am I off target in my advice? Any other suggestions?

I would write a diet out for her to follow. So she has something to really follow and go by. Give her one cheat day a week so she can enjoy herself and splurge a little. Keep her at moderate carbs, but things like rice, baked potato, yams, oatmeal and veggies. If she gets the munchies have her eat a protein bar, Low Carb 2.. Chocolate Smores Supreme by Biochem has only 3 grams of carbs and they tast really good! We all need some junk food now and then, just help keep her in line, cause dieting is hard

Hi MD! I'm a sugarholic myself. And y'know what helped me? NOTHING. I mean, no matter how I slice it, I have to be the one to make the conscious decision on what goes into my mouth......blowing 1st place at a contest in the fall HELPED ME OUT BIG TIME! Now I know that I need a less-strict diet over many weeks as opposed to hitting it really hard and clean for a shorter period of time. When bulking I eat whatever the FUCK I WANT -who will have to deal w/dieting and doing extra cardio in the end? ME....so I know exactly who I am screwing when I eat too much shit. It's up to her....but you certainly are a sweety for caring! ------------------

I am a recovering sugar-holic. Now that I am eating a more balanced diet, I don't get the sugar cravings like I used to. I used to have to take a nap just to get through the day. I was tired and hungry constantly. I was under the false impression that as long as I worked out and my clothes fit, I could eat whatever I wanted. That included cookies for dinner on a regular basis in place of a meal. That pretty much worked until my mid 30's. When I started getting more serious about weight training and tracking my progress with a training log, I realized my body was NOT going to make any more gains without a better diet. For me the first challenge was to make sure I got enough protein. I wasn't before. Getting carbs was easy, but then I began to look for where I could substitute in healthier carbs. I did not eat much bad fat to begin with, but I began supplementing with flaxseed oil. I've had to make these changes bit by bit. For instance, I used to always have 2 or 3 small chocolates everyday mid-morning and mid-afternoon. I have substituted the chocolates for meal replacement bar (40-40-30 type) - 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 for the afternoon. That's my candy now. Tastes pretty good, and keeps me feeling full. In my mind it's still a treat, but at least it's giving my body some nutrients too. Eating smaller meals serveral times a day has helped a lot. This keeps the blood sugar stable, so you won't go into the crave zone. It's psychologically satisfying too to know your next meal's just a couple hours away. A written out diet is good for some people, but would not work for me. I have been aiming for one positive change a week and then building on that. I never thought I could give up that daily chocolate, but I have, and I don't miss it. All the other little changes have really added up. I never believed when I'd read about people eating healty diets who'd say they actually began losing their taste for unhealthy foods, but I'm believing it now. My diet still has room for improvement, and my progress has been slow, but I'm moving forward AND I'm seeing lot's of progress in my workouts. I now think about that progress before I eat something. I still eat those cookies though, but it's AFTER a healthy dinner and a lot fewer cookies. I don't eat them every night either. I know some people have a "no carbs at night" rule, but I'm not ready to tackle that one yet.

When I added more protein and fat to my diet and cut way back on pastas, flours and sugars, it definately helped the sugar cravings. It never goes away completely. There is no magic answer. But its true that the more you eat well, the less you tend to crave crap. I do allow treat days for myself. I aim for 2 a month but sometimes end up with once a week. On these days I let myself eat whatever. I actually stay away from the protein bars - because I end up eating them like any other junk food. ------------------

B-MOM that is an excellent picture! (face shot) I didn't like the last pict I thought your hair looked strange! This one though is very good! Anyway, I too cannot tell you how bad my sugar cravings are. I wake sometimes in the middle of the night(and I love to sleep) with horrible cravings for anything with sugar in it. I have even eaten peanut butter and sugar sandwiches. I used to order dessert before my dinner while out. I have found nothing to help this. The only thing I do is let myself have 1 small bite size Three Musketeers or such everyday. If I deny myself and "be good" I will sooner or later freak out and binge on a shitload of sugar especially if pms has set in. This is when I get bitchy and resent the feeling of guilt from eating what my body is craving! So it's best for me to allow myself this small pleasure. I personally find it ridiculous to think a person who exercises is going to look like crap if they eat a tiny amount of sugar a day. Sure you train hard to look good but hell if you can't enjoy life which does include eating things you like in moderation I say screw it all! I am addicted to sugar. Once I wrote down what I ate for like 2 weeks. That helped. But now I try to focus on what I can eat not what I can't Sugar-free snacks and crystal light for when I am craving. Right now I am on a low carb diet which I could never have done a year ago. Maybe if she writes it down she'll be more careful. I don't have cheat days because for me a cheat day was a go crazy eating day. Now I have a carb day every 10 days where I don't restrict my carbs as much but my priority is to get my protein for the day & water in. That usually keeps me from going crazy..... Just a thought.

I have had pretty good results taking HCA for curing my carb cravings. Has anyone else on here had positive results (or negative) with this supplement for THIS purpose? MR. BMJ

i'm new here but i know a thing or two about sugar. i gave up sugar about 3 years ago after having sweets every day. i still eat sweet one in a while. the main sweetener i use is concentrated fruit juice very rarely i have nutrasweet as it actually holds on to the calories and turns into wood alcohol if heated. if you live in LA there is a great sugarfree bakery called mani's. he has a bake book as well called sweet & natutal baking (amazon.com) even my friends who eat sugar can't believe it how good it tastes. last x-mas was the first time in 3 years that i had some sugar. this stuff is like a drug because i took me 1 month to not be tempted. it gives you the same rush as drugs. once you lived through the first month or 2 you'll be fine. be aware that less energy, shakes and sweating might occur, but then the energy level turns around. there is another company which makes sugar free fruit juice sweetend fudge sauce which is amazing and fat free called wax orchard. they do mailorder (www.waxorchard.com) or you can find it at wild oats in california. i use the fuge sauce in some milk (hot or cold) to get over the craving.

Cybervixen - I can relate. My treat days are STILL pretty crazy, but this is something I've come to accept about myself and I don't beat myself up over it anymore. I too keep a food journal. Its really helpful because then I have a hardcore idea of what energy intake really works for me. ------------------ |
