Have any ladies on here, been diagnosed with hypothyroidism(sp?)? At my urging my girlfriend had a thyroid panel done yesterday by her doctor. Recently her metabolism has taken a nose dive, she's been putting on weight steadily for a couple of months, but in the last month its gotten pretty bad. She always feels cold, and fatigues very easily, and this is all leading to severe depression. Her diet and workouts are very good but she seems to be regressing physically. Well anyway back to the question, she hasn't got the results back yet but I was curious to see if any of you ladies (or men for that matter) have been diagnosed with a thyroid problem, and what course of action your doctor took. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Peace,

Wife had the same thing... Seems like women get this more than guys. Or maybe guys don't care and never get it checked. Anyways, you are wise to get this in check NOW. That downward spiral is hell on women. ------------------ Lobo

There are some great sites on hypothyroidism...it is more commen in women and from what I've read, you can have symptoms even if you are within the "normal" range but at the low end. (Thats me) So tell her to get a panel done - it will only take a moment for her to go in and get it checked and could save her months of agony. ------------------

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after I had my daughter 5 1/2 yrs ago. I've been on the meds obviously 5 1/2 years. To tell you the truth, it takes sometime to get the right dosage but you feel much better after the first month of treatment. You do have to take the meds for the rest of your life but all in all it's worth it. She'll be just fine. Make sure that the whole panel is done. If she's at the low end (meaning border line numbers) make sure that your doc does not say there is nothing wrong. I've seen this done before. She sounds like she has pretty much all the symptoms of hypothyroidism. For me, I found out because I got very lethargic and my hair would break off easily. Feeling much better now. By the way, they will probably put her on synthroid. If that does not help her in the long run, talk to the doctor about mixing it wil cytomel. It took 4 years before we could get it just right. My numbers were all in but I still felt like crap. After we mixed the cytomel in with the synthroid, I felt a big change. Too bad I have to take a ton of it. Good luck

There should not be any negative concerns about doing something "FOR THE REST OF YOU LIFE" Hell folks, we eat every day. Sleep, shit, piss, take vitamins, get dressed (well, hum there are them days the wife & I get naked all day ) and do MANY things everyday for the rest of our lives. If it is of a great benefit, keeps your life sane, and lets you live a better day - WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL??? Be gratefull there IS something that can be done to correct the sitch! ------------------ Lobo

Good observation Lobo, hell I'd let a mule kick me in the ass everyday for the rest of my life if I though it would make my girl feel better. As long as cost wasn't a factor I don't think it's that big a deal to take a pill everyday. Thanks MissFit, that's what I'm trying to find out. I'm curious as to what most doctors prescribe for this condition. And I know what you mean about the doctor not thinking there's anything wrong with you. Her doctor has already told her he doesn't think she needs to lose any weight. But she doesn't want to hear all that jazz. She feels that there's a problem and she wants it fixed, and if I'm going to help her I want to be as informed as I can be. Thanks for all your responses. Still no word back on the tests but I let you know what the doc says. Peace,

that's the problem i am having now. i am at the very low end of the scale. 4.9 out of 5.5 and my doc is telling me that there is nothing wrong with me. But all the symptoms are there. extreme fatiuge, severly dry skin, hair falling out and breaking, dificulty losing weight. i could go on forever and it's a battle to have any doc go against a lab slip that tells you that your "normal". there's a study that says that most women don't feel well unless they are at a 1 or 2 level. Be persistent with the docs they are stubborn! she's lucky to have a guy who is so concerned about her health! and so willing to help her. I'm jealous!!!LOL

I'm glad I'm not the only one out there with this nuisance. I've been on Synthroid for 2 years, it took 6 months to get my dosage right. The doc's say my dosage is stablized however, I still feel like crap. They don't know what's wrong with me. Yes, I must say the year 2000 was shit for me. I slipped into deep depression with the loss of my Dad and my husband has been gone more than he's been home (I can thank the military for that one). I'm also on Zoloft. Maybe the answer is throwing in the cytomel like MsFIT said. What do you guys think? All I know is I've got to find an answer somewhere and the doc's sure aren't helping me. Any info or ideas would be great.

If you are at the low end it could be something simple. lack of iodine in your diet. without iodine you cant produce thyroid hormone. thats why the government back in the 20's started iodizing salt it was a way for everyone to get enough. low thyroid was actually a epidemic previous to that. Ways to supplement with iodone are sea kelp and bladderwrack. ------------------

I have hypothyroidism. It was really hard to diagnose. I was cold all the time. I was alway sick to my stomach. Then when I started to sleep all day & my hair started to get rough & fall out I got worried. Sex drive didn't exist. I had tingling in my legs. Muscle cramps & headaches. I worked out 4 days a week and was seeing no progress for about a year. I had all the symptoms. I think I was an 8 which is high but not that high. I was diagnosed 2 yrs ago but I still am not stable. I mix my synthroid with cytomel because my Dr. won't put me on Armour which is the mix that mimics the body's thyroid. It eases the symptoms better than synthroid alone. I heard there is a new drug like Armour that is synthetic and more reliable than Armour and more likely to be prescribed it is called Liotrix. I also heard that Anavar helps but I have never done an Anavar cycle. I am finally seeing an internist thurs. I am hoping to get this new drug. Will keep you posted. cybervixen, where are you from? Most labs use a scale of .08 to 5 or 5.5 to judge throid levels .08 being hyperthroidism and 5. or 5.5 being hypothyroisim. just curious as to what scale your lab uses.

Cybervixen, what dose of t4 and t3 do you take? I take 150mcg of T4 daily as prescribed by my Dr., just wondered what you felt was a good amount of t3 to add. also does your Dr. know you are adding the t3? ifso does he object? thanks

To tell you the truth I don't know what my last Dr. was doing which is why I am switching to an internist because like I said it has been 2 yrs & I am not better yet. I am from UT. I usually take 25 mcg T3 & 100 mcg of synthroid. I don't know how safe it is but it helps my symptoms better than synthroid alone. |
