Cheating is usually associated with a negative outcome. For example, cheat on income tax, possible negative outcome; cheat on one of my exams, very negative outcome; cheat on your wife, well worse than cheating on my exam. Anyway, you all get my point. Now let's exam the use of the word cheat in bodybuilding and you'll understand why it puckers my ass****. Use of cheat straps = positive outcome (see other thread for explanation). Cheat day (diet), refills muscle glycogen, reduces mental fatigue, maintains metabolic rate and decreases the likelihood of total dieting failure = positive outcome. Cheat reps at the end of the set, allows recruitment of all muscle fibers (if done properly), resulting in increased muscle growth = positive outcome. So maybe we should quit calling it cheat, and use "positive outcome" (day, straps or reps). Andy Rooney, oh sorry, I mean F1.

hmmm. I think cheating implies 'living on the edge'. Cheating death. tempting fate ...okay, that doesn't have cheating literally, but it is implied. And cheater straps = something you take to the old hubby after he's taken advantage of the new secretary. just another perspective.. ------------------

I refer to cheat reps as "controlled cheating"... This is kinda a philosophical thread! I think "cheating" refers to "coloring outside of the lines", when it comes to lifting/dieting...I mean, we have this standard set of rules we usually go by, but our bodies get used to the same thing really fast...so...that's where cheating comes into play, and can be a benefit (when done at the right times and in moderation)...it's all about moderation!

I've always called my "cheat" days "treat" days. And since I've never used straps I can't comment on that. We butcher the english language a lot. We "love" everything, we "hate" everything else, we "always", we "never".....

Well in my neck of the woods they're called lifting straps. I think that describes them rather well. And I never cheat I just have meals when I eat whatever I want. And all the other meals I eat less than what I want. As for my weight training, I have always described it as lifting with 'good form' for as many reps as I can before eeking out another few reps any way I can. I did cheat just a little on my taxes this year though. Shhhhh.

Man Monster, I hear ya! It seems like if I let my work out suffer for any reason (lack os sleep, too many nights out dancing at the club, etc..) the diet just goes out the window, too! It seems so easy if I miss a work out to 'cheat' the diet. It sounds almost backwards, but I think I get it in my head "Fuck it, I missed the work out, missed the cardio, this brownie won't kill me!" A girl has her weeknesses, chocolate is the other one ) Fox P.S. Don't leave the board! ------------------

I love to cheat! Really, I do. This is a great point F1. Now don't get me wrong, form is KING on many lifts, i.e., deads and squats. And form is imperative on all lifts. BUT, at some point one can go past a certain failing point by "cheating". Example: I love standing shoulder presses with the O Bar. Now 135 goes up sweet and easy. I go nice and slow, good form, leg slightly bent, yada, yada, yada. 185 gets a tad bit hard. Usually the fist set goes smooth and can make 10 reps. But 225, oh boy. By now my shoulders are on fire and after about 5 reps I can no longer strictly press. So what do I do?!?! I use my legs to bounce it up and this lets me get some MoFo negatives in. Did I cheat? Yup. Did my shoulders get additional work? Yup. Can I wipe my ass the next day? Nope! One thing to remember, cheating does not, and should NEVER be used in an exercise which may result in potential injury due to improper form. Cheating, the method of champions! ------------------ Lobo |
