Is the ammonia smell a bad thing? I've been smelling it more often and stronger after my workouts. Am I missing something from my diet?

You are missing carbs! When you are on a very high protein diet with very low carbs you will get that ammonia smell. Are you dieting for something? Add a few carbs back in your diet and it wont be so pronounced.

I wrote last week about what was going on with my system..."I'm 5'8" and 190 lbs. Most people guess my weight at 150 (I'm pretty solid under the lovely layer of fat). I currently (and have been for 3 months) lift 2 on, 1 off, 2 on, 2 off and do 30-45 min. of cardio 5-6 times/week. I build muscle and bulk easily. I keep my workouts interesting and change often but I CAN'T LOOSE THE FREAKIN' FAT (I have not lost one single pound...in fact, all I do is gain and I'm not looking to buy a larger wardrobe)! My diet is lower in fat and moderate in carbs and protein; averaging 1500 cal/day. I try to stay hydrated but it's a struggle. I hate drinking water. Hate it, hate it, hate it, but my man stands over top of me until I finish several glasses." Several people gave me some great advice and I changed my regimen (thank you all!). I've been doing cardio in the morning and lifting in the early evening. I nixed complex carbs from my afternoon diet and only comsume veggies and protein. I'm not exercising on the weekends (only one so far) and I'm trying to eat more (good foods) at that time, too. AND I'm trying and I MEAN TRYING to drink water, although it's still a struggle. I'm desperately trying to loose fat. I know some muscle is going with it but my main concern, right now, is burning the fat. Two other questions: 2. I am burning up! I am constantly hot. Even as I type, I am on fire. It goes on, all day long....Burning fat, I hope? ;-)

The ammonia is likely a by-product of the purine nucleotide cycle. When you engage in high-intensity intermittent exercise, at some point you won't be able to generate enough ATP via phosphorylation of ADP with PCr (ADP + PCr + H+ = Creatine + ATP). What then happens is 2 ADPs are combined to form an ATP and AMP. AMP is acted upon by AMP deaminase to yield IMP and ammonia. Ammonia is very volatile so it comes out of the blood easily, thus you taste and smell it. Personally, I'd try some Creabose by Eclipse (creatine + ribose). The additional Cr may help with PCr (phosphocreatine regeneration in the muscle) and the ribose with adenine-nucleotide synthesis. High protein diets and excessive breakdown of protein for energy could contribute as well. May want to have some blood chems done to check liver and kidney function. Gotta drink water if you are consuming a lot of protein or you'll get yourself in trouble. AAS are lipolytic. That means they burn fat, regardless of how fat you are. However, those that aromatize (turn into estrogen) or cause water retention would be a poor choice. Oxandrolone has been shown to reduce abdominal body fat in men (real clinical literature). It does not aromatize or 5-alpha reduce and is not known for dramatic increases in muscle mass. Thus, if one were to use an AAS for fat loss, OX would probably be the agent of choice. Get your bodyfat checked, otherwise you're guessing based on what you see in the mirror and that's almost always wrong. You may want to cycle your diet. Couple of low carb days, then one higher carb, then back to low carb. A thermogenic may also help (EPH + caffeine) if you can tolerate it safely. F1

it comes from taking in more protein than your body can obsorb properly. amonia is a by-product of whats not used for muscle tissue growth. cut back 10g a week until u can't smell it anymore. on a side not at least u know your getting more than enough protein in your diet. ------------------ |
