I've been on the board for a couple of months now and really enjoy the posts. I was just curious to who is actually competing in fitness competitions? It sounds like there is a lot of bodybuilders...having some trouble distinguishing who's what. Other than 'muscular ectomorph', I'm not really sure who else is. Curious, because I'm preparing for my first show. Congratualtions "musc.ecto." on your win

Yes, I have the build of a fitness competitor, but I lack the grace and gymnastic talent that is mandatory to compete in fitness......so competitive lightweight bber I B . ------------------

I've seen your pics, I'd have to say you do look pretty good, and could probably pass as a fitness competitor if you had too.

Fitness here, but I competed in the Galaxy. My last competition was 98, I just had a baby in September. I'm not sure if I'd compete in an o-course again, but it was a lot of fun. I bombed big time in the bathing suit round, but i figured out the "politics" of the galaxy afterwards. I looked great and felt great, and I wasn't doing it for a bunch of fat boy wanna be body builders who judged anyway, I did it for me!I'd like to try a bodybuilding show some day, to take my physique to another level...especially after an 11 pound baby! jayjay- I got an idea of the politics, myself...glad i'm not the only one who feels this way! The obstacle course is a BLAST, though! I was nervous as hell during the swimwear comp! ------------------

How can you tell I'm new to this. Politics?

Fitgal, politics meaning that the swimsuit round sometimes has nothing to do with your body. You have too suck up to certain people, buy pictures from certain photographers, and continue to spend your money on the competition so that the judges will "know" you next time. The judges at my show were telling all the competitors they were judges. My scores ranged from 95 to 79 in the swimsuit. That is pretty screwed up! Some judges rewarded for low body fat, others wanted softer muscle, some like blondes, some redheads, etc... That's politics. You gotta have thick skin and be in a competiton for the right reasons. The Galaxy's judging is a lot different than others, I think most others (npc, ect) are better.

Buff blond, when did you compete in the Galaxy? Do you think you'll go for it again?

jayjay- I competed this summer. I have competed in Ms. Fitness before, and I feel it was run with more integrity. I would like to compete next summer in the Galaxy, it's just so darn expensive! What I didn't think was fair was that we were given a quick run-through of the swimwear rules and what to do...then when time came for us to go, after we had been waiting FOREVER in a room, most of us "newbies" were more nervous...it just seemed to be unorganized... I enjoyed meeting other competitors, although too many were stuck-up... Do you plan on competing again? ------------------

I agree about the quick run through of the swimwear BB. I went to a camp run by the Galaxy, and it was supposed to be a Ms.America type thing; walking down one side of the stage to the other. Instead, the morning of the bathing suit round, they changed it to 4 quater turns on a platform. It was awful, because I had practiced doing it the other way for so long. That is probably why I bombed so bad. I saw one competitor making out with snyder in the parking lot the night before the swimwear-it was a joke. I'm not sure if I'll compete in the Galaxy again, maybe the women's tr-fit. I did make some friends at the show, one girl just came in third overall and won the masters! It was really expensive, between entry fees, hotel, air it cost over 800! Oh well, at least I can say i did it.

The competition I will be in is just provincial. Being a smaller event, do you think judging will be more fair. I'm sometimes not really sure what I'm getting myself into. There are not a lot of people around here that are into fitness, I live in a small city. A lot of the preparing I am doing myself, for lack of trainers and nutritionists in this area. Do you all pay a lot of money on trainers, choreographers, and nutritionists, etc? Or do you do a lot of things on your own? I know a lady who competed in the galaxy this passed year, she placed higher than expected, so she was really pleased with the whole event and said she met a lot of nice people (it was her first time). When you get higher in the rankings I imagine you notice the politics a lot more. [This message has been edited by fitgal (edited November 28, 2000).]

Damn...I would like to win...but not bad enough to be muggin-down with George Snyder!!! I am a personal trainer myself, so I basically call my own shots as far as workouts go...I feel that if you know what you're doing, and you research tons and talk to others about it, you'll do fine on your own!

I guess the main reason we compete, though, is for personal reasons...only a select few competitors make any money from it...it's so much work, you have to love it to stick with it! Guess that puts things in perspective...

I would think the politics wouldn't be as bad in a smaller show. In a competition like the Galaxy, there are a lot of girls (my show had 82) and everyone is in great shape, so it comes down to the other things mentioned earlier. Most girl are thinking they are going to be the next Monica Brant or Torrie Wilson and be a big time fitness model, but it's just not that easy. The shows are expensive to do. Luckily with the G you don't have to hire a somebody to help you with dance/gymnastics. I had a trainer help me, but I didn't hook up with him until about 7 weeks out. I made the finals, but it was the same weekend as my wedding... OOOOHHHH! Another funny thing about the show was this old guy, I'd talking almost 80, who was protanned up and shredded was walking around trying to find girls interested in doing a baywatch episode. My friend called him an old leather shoe, that's the only name I have for him. Let me say, he was a total pervert! He was telling a bunch of us the day of the course "I may be old, but I can still do push-ups on the young girls!" He was looking at the Galaxy like it was a freakin pussy buffet! He was also a judge which made it worse because every chick was up his ass trying to get on baywatch. What a trip.... Fitgal, your show HAS to be better! Keep focused and train and eat smart and you'll do great. I just did a killer leg workout and I need to sit in a tub before it's too painful to sit on the toilet!

I am NOT yet a fitness competitor, but I have trained and am friends with many. And I can assure you that from the smallest regional event to the largest international event, politics will always be a part of the game. Don't be bitter. Just learn the politics. If politics is not for you, then just compete for the experience of it, as well as the many neat competitors you will meet. Just remember, THERE IS NO PRIZE MONEY, although endorsements at the TOP level of competition can be considerable if you place first. At lower levels you do it for yourself, your friends and family, and for a tacky plastic trophy. Oh, and the photos

MS you bring up a good point about the politics, they will be there. If you haven't competed it's very hard not to be bitter <sob> after training, dieting etc having a portion of the contest be completely out of your control can really piss you off! I think that is why bodybuilding and fitness isn't getting the mainstream appeal every other sport enjoys. I think I'm going to start a new topic about politics Me? Bitter? Ha! I'm more of the sour grapes type. Bitter seems so harsh...

Thanks for the responses. Obviously I still have a few things to learn, probably/hopefully will come with experience. I have a background in gymnastics and a little in dance. I am having help choreographing my routine, and the rest of the training I am doing on my own. Beginning in January I will be joining in on a gymnastics class so I can have some practice to improve these skills I haven't done in so many years. The competition is in June. I realize very few can make a living this way, and thats why my expectations right now are just to get up on stage and try my best, hopefully look my best too [This message has been edited by fitgal (edited November 29, 2000).]

MS, when will your first competition be? And WHOAH for the 11 lb baby jayjay, I'm sure it was worth every pound. Good Luck if you decide to do bodybuilding. If I don't do as well as I'd like at fitness, than I think I may consider bodybuilding also. It would definately be a new level to take your body too.

Thanks, the 11 pounder is now over 17 and 25.5 inches long! (he's 2 and a half months old now) It's tough to hold him after a tough chest workout. You're way ahead of the game because you have experience in gymnastics. I'd throw my back out if I tried to do a cartwheel! That's why I did an o-course, but the training wasn't any easier. I did running/football style drills 3-4 days a week for about 2 hours in full sweats in the summer of Atlanta,Ga. I'd run stairs for 20-30 minutes straight, do 100 push ups, pull ups off a soccer goal (how's that for an improv) squat thrusts... wait, I don't really want to do this again, do I? I know this sounds corny, but really HAVE FUN! The people who win always have the most fun! Try not to go in with an expectations and you will be so excited when all is said and done. I think that advice is so good, I'm going to try it myself! Off to cardio hell...I've got some baby fat I need to convert! Stay focused! |
