Since I know many of you like to know the why and wherefore of advice you read here, but most of you don't like the long, scientific posts, I'm introducing this snippet of the day. I'll try to keep them short summaries in lay english of current research. Sometimes controversial, sometimes a little off-topic, but always educational.

The innaugural snippet is:

Moderate alcohol consumption increases bone mineral density in elderly women.

In a study of 489 post-menopausal women, Rapuri et al. found a positive effect of alcohol on bone mineral density (BMD) in moderate drinkers, consuming between 28.6 and 57.2 grams per week of alcohol. These women had significantly higher BMD at almost every skeletal site than nondrinking women, except for the femoral neck. Consumption of greater amounts of alcohol had an inconsistent effect on BMD. Serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels were 25-30% lower in drinkers than in nondrinkers, which may be a cause of reduction in bone resorption and resultant greater BMD. After adjustments for menopause, which occurs about two years later in drinkers than in nondrinkers, a further explanation for the increase in BMD was higher levels of bone formation markers and estrogen, both of which were stimulated by alcohol. In an associated editorial, it has been suggested that until it is better understood why only moderate doses of alcohol have a positive effect on bone, it would be premature to recommend alcohol use as a preventative measure for osteoporosis.

Personally, I'm considering doing a very small independant trial on myself and my friends with my delectable homemade 'blackboy peach' wine.

in an effort to evenly distribute my 28-57 grams of alcohol, I think that an iv drip would be the best solution. I'm on my way to get this approved by my boss right now.

To put it in perspective, that's the equivalent of 2-3 beers per day, or up to 5 single whiskeys!! Of course, the effect this might have on your diet and training is the topic of another day (and don't try this with your winny/anavar cycles).

Great post MS. This gives a different/positive angle to a drink/drug that is otherwise considered unhealthy. Think I might add this knowledge to my thanksgiving dinner for Thurs, Fri, and Sat. Now that I think about it, I am gonna do a little extra on Friday night, hehehe.

That's where you can find this study.

Also, this is a good one too.

Thanks MR. BMJ (please tell me that DOESN'T stand for "Britisch Medical Journal"). However, I shouldn't have to point out to YOU of all people that those studies were only done on WOMEN, and do not NECESSARILY apply to men watching the football on thanksgiving day.Have a great pig-out everyone.

PS: You really should try to get to bed earlier MR. BMJ. You know how important sleep is to all aspects of immmumity/recovery/anabolism.

I was wondering when somebody was going to comment about these late postings, hehehe. This is usually the best thing for me to get to sleep. It helps me fall asleep easier, just sitting here and going over stuff, etc...or until the sleeping pills kick in. British Medical Journal...LOL, I wish. I usually go to the library a couple of times a week and flip through journals and copy the ones which are of interest. I have really turned into quite the geek, I mean school boy these last couple of years. I have to do this so that I don't go out and start partying all the time. I'm on my last limb as far as school goes. I screw-up again, and my rear-end will be in a world of hurt. I have to get all A's and B's from here on out due to my screwing off in the earlier years. And oh yeah, I guess I got a little happy on your article and decided to be an elderly woman for a few days, I'll have to cut it back to just Friday night then. I think I might have a date, so I might want to loosen up a little, if you know what I mean.
