I am currently running 15-18 miles per week, treadmill and outdoors. I am noticing fatigue in my knees when I stand for long periods, but I don't want to give up running. I was told rollerblading is a good cardio exercise without the joint stress. Has anyone tried a serious rollerblading program or have any other suggestions?

Rollerblading is ideal if you have any knee probs. You have to push yourself a bit harder with rollerblades (it's easier to slack of the pace on blades). Another great workout I've found is scootering. Sounds stupid, but it can really get your heart rate up and seems to hit the glutes and hammies nicely.

I don't know about ice-skating. I personally never get puffed on ice skates. Maybe it has to do with not enough resistance?

Yeah IronGod. Those short ironing boards on wheels that all the kids terrorize the neighborhood on. Best way to get even is to terrorize them at their own game.

Thanks for the advice. I am always looking for ways to keep my cardio exciting. I didn't realize riding those scooters was so physical. Can you find them anywhere? Are they pricey?

Cheap and easy to get. Just knock off the next kid you see on one and steal it from them.

Seriuosly, I don't know about cost(I 'borrow' mine from the kids). But you might want to try before you buy just in case it doesn't do it for you. I've been scootering to work for the last week (about 2 miles each way) and I'm pretty hot and sweaty when I stop. I also have a sore butt. It's important to alternate the leg you push with though, other wise you might end up really lopsided and funny looking!

True, the lopsided effect really doesn't do it for me. I will keep an eye out for a kid just asking for me to knock him off his scooter.

They are called "razors" (brand name)...and EVERY fucking kid has one, that is except mine. Yes, they begged and pleaded, but all of my girls have bicycles and that is quite enough!

These scooters run in the neighborhood of 90 - 100 USD. If we multiply by four, you all can see why we AIN'T GETTIN' 'EM!

Expense coupled with the fact that the pediatricians office volunteered at our last "well-visit" (luckily all of my kids were present) that they see MANY, MANY scooter-related injuries - not safe AT ALL.....so my kids very quickly changed their minds.

Rollerblades rock!
I play roller hockey and it's done wonders for my quads, calves, and IT bands. ....work up a hell of a sweat too. I disagree on the ice skating though. If you bend at the waist in that hockey stance and speed around the rink, you'll get hot. Everyone will stay out of your way too.

I would agree with the ice skating if they always let you skate as fast as you want. But at the only rink in my town they'll let you have ONE SONG of 'speed' skating per session. That's it. If you try to get a sweat up outside of that, they send in the heavies to deal with you.

After spending many hours watching the kids on scooters, I can assure you that they are not intrinsically dangerous as a mode of transport or exercise. It's only when certain individuals attempt all manner of Evil Knevil type stunts on them that I see the bloody knees, broken wrists, etc....

But back to the original thread, rollerblading is a fine exercise, and fun to boot.
