What kind of cardio should I do if I wanna build a stronger heart to conteract the stress on it from the heavy lifting. Long distance, slow running or short distance, fast running? Or if I'm on a stationary bike should I put more or less tension?

I've been doing the LifeCycle which has been recommended by my doctor, I am an amateur bodybuilder and my doctor is aware of the stress of lifting and maintaining a regular job, he highyly recommends the life cyle or step climber. Flex on.

Hi ethertek, Thats what the life cycle is. Its just a certain brand of exersize bike. Its made by life fitness but it really sucks cuz it runs on batteries. Any exersize bike will do. Personally I like to run. I am not a great runner, I can run about 3 to 3.5 miles at a time at about a 6:30 per mile pace. This seems to be very very effective for building a strong heart. Just stick to a slow pace like the one I do. It makes you feel really good after a nice run.

actually lifting weights will build a stronger heart than any aerobic exercise. A weight lifter or powerlifters heart is able to pump more blood per stroke/beat. If you just think about it 95% of all movement in life is anaerobic not aerobic. I never understood why so many people emphasise on cardio for a healthy heart. Thats what the mass media tells us so people believe and never question it. I'm not saying it doesnt help or dont do it. Aerobic exercise does improve blood circulation making it so your heart doesnt have to work as hard but it will not do much for strengthening the heart muscle. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Ubermass (edited September 04, 2000).]

95% of our movements are anaerobic? wtf???? um, anaerobic is an exercise performed in the absence of oxygen. this means that you will have to stop after a fairly short amount of time since your body is not able to rely on the kreb's cycle for all of its energy and turns to fermentation. i hope you meant 95% of our movements are aerobic...(more like 99% actually)

Thanks for the replies....It looks like my best bet would be to start running 2-3 miles and gradually increase distance. But...in Canada here it's going to get cold very fast so in the winter I'm gonna have to do some stationary biking.

ubermass: then you might want to explain yourself cuz that was an incredibly stupid statement. one of the stupidest i've ever read on this board actually, and that is saying alot.

ethertek, I'm in the Upper Peninsula of MI and I run 2 times per week and don't plan on quitting just because winter's coming. Look around for these neat little straps that go over your running shoes and have little carbide studs on the bottom. That'll keep you going (as long as the snow isn't waist deep!). Or, go to your local school and run some laps in the gym. Hitting your exercise cycle on blizzard days would work out fine for cardio, too. And shoveling out your driveway is always an awesome overall workout!! BRING ON THE SNOW!!!

d1734... Actually Ubermass is right. 95% of our movements are anearobic. That is, they utilise as you correctly state, krebs cycle. Think about it. How much of the daily movements you perform involve work outputs lasting more than 1.6 seconds, and with refraction periods of less than 0.4 seconds? Very few is the answer bud. In fact, i am willing to bet that the only truly aerobic work any of us do, is our aerobics. Basically if you had taken the time to consider ubermass' statement, and not been so keen to call it "one of the stupidiest statement i have ever read on this board" before you thought it through, then you would not have made the almighty fool of yourself that you just did. If you would like more info on why most of our movement is anaerobic ... A) get a grounding in human life sciences. B) go visit Fred Hatfields site...he loves this kinda stuff...www.drsquat.com. C) Hold your breath....lol. Cheers, G.

hmm...am i missing something here? are you saying that me sitting here right now at my computer is an anaerobic exercise? sorry, but i don't feel the lactic acid build up in my fingers yet....if most of our movements were anaerobic then that would make powerlifting an aerobic exercise....wtf are you trying to say?

anaerobic exericse: exercise that builds the muscle through tension. thats the definition from www.dictionary.com. how often each day do we build muscle through tension? maybe 15 mins total (this is not including breaks)? the rest of what we do is aerobic; it does not incur an oxygen debt.
