I know that wide-grip pull-ups are supposed to be a staple in any back routine, but I can't seem to get more than 6 or 7 reps. Is it still worth it to include these in my routine or is there something else I should replace them with until I get a little stronger? thanks.

Do the same exercise on the lat pulldown machine. Until such time that you work up to BW..

If you can only do 6 or 7, fine do just 6 or 7. Keep at it and it won't be long until you can easily do 3x10. But yes, add the lat pull down to fill in the gaps. What you can try and do is aim for 4x10 in a combo of pullups and pulldowns. Do as many pullups as you can do (say 7) and finish immediatly with 3 pulldowns. Next set 5 pullups/5 pulldowns, etc. Make sure you try and do you weight or just alittle less on the pulldowns. PT

Hey, PT101. Excellent advice! I have a hard time doing much with pull-ups so I've pretty much given up on them (I know, "Bad, oak, bad!") but that's a great idea! I will surely try that on my next back day. Thanks.

Yes excellent advice...I'm still trying to do one free pull up...getting closer all the time though...I've been using the assist machine and its been helping. ------------------

I used this when I was doing the GVT. Trying to do 10x10 chinups was tough. So I used this and after 6 cycles I was ALOT stronger on my chins. Just got to get back it again. SKY, to complement the assist machine, get a spotter to help you up and squeeze out a few negatives....this is another way to add a few/one to your sets. But man do they hurt. Good training PT

Thanks for the help, guys. That's just what I was looking for. Also, I've tried the assist machine, but the problem is that I only need the assistance on the last couple, not the full set. I'd rather do as many free reps as possible, and then go to the assist machine or the pulldowns, like you suggest.

The only way to get good at doing pull ups is by doing them. Theres no other substitute like lat pull downs or whatever. Keep at it and eventually you will get good at it. ------------------

I could never get past 11 chins,I always did them to failure. Then I changed to doing just 7 chins twice/day.In a month I could do 13 and now I can do 17 and I do a set of 12 once or twice/day. This may help with your pull ups.Try doing 4-5 everyday,it's easy and may help.
