how do deadlifts help build so much mass? all it looks like is you're picking up a bar. and how does it benefit your upper body? it seems like you're just doing a squat without the bar on your shoulders. but with deadlifts, how many sets and reps should you do to really make any gains? and is this the correct way to do it? http://www.megsinet.net/~frank416/deadlift.html see i have never done deadlifts so that's my reason for this post.

It is my opinion that deadlifts are a waste of energy. They are a very good power movement and can build strength, no doubt. However I would recommend to you being a novice Stiff leg deadlift's can be done for the lower back and are safer and in my opinion more productive because there is full range of motion

Deadlifts...if done heavy are an excellent exercise for lower back and hams. They are also a good 'all around' mass builder.

The deadlift works well becuase it hits a lrage majority of muscle groups. deadlifts is in the same ballpark with Squats. Last year I started using deadlifts in the off season. My back is now the biggest it has every been. And my squat increased greatly. Make sure you use proper form.

the reason deads work is because they put a stress on your whole body. And if you are a beginner do them. They will help you gain lots of strength and up the speed of your gains. They also help build a base for your future. too many prople are wanting big arms which is great but they are all beginners. The best way to get size on your arms is to do squats and deadlifts. no one can have 20 inch arms with toothpick legs and no foundation to build on. I personally love deadlifts. ------------------

Mystic Hormones is absolutely right. Because muscle develops proportionately, you need to buil mass everywhere including your back and legs. Have you ever seen anyone with massive legs and tiny arms. I havn't. Obviously the body grows better as a whole and thats why you need compund power movements like the deadlift.

Did someone say Deadlifts? Don't listen to the guy who said they are a waste of energy. People who say that are the ones who don't have the balls to do them all out. Trust me, since I started doing deads regularly, they have helped change my whole body. Do them and grow! ------------------

I did deadlifts the other day for fun. I still don't implement them into my routine, and I don't bench press either, get alot more results from DB press. to each thier own, but deadlifting to me seems like a macho badass lift you do more to turn heads in the gym than to build muscle. I deadlifted 510lbs @182 pounds 19 years old and 8% bodyfat, 5'6" By the way I've never juiced. [This message has been edited by Valdez (edited August 29, 2000).]

Deadlifts will rip your fingers off and pull your shoulders right out of the sockets.Of course that never happens,it just feels like it does. They also make me feel all nausius and things get all black like I'm gonna pass out,and sometimes that happens,or it seems like it did. I gained about 20 lbs. from deads and my back looks all big and weird so I have to keep doing them cause I'm afraid I'll turn back into a girly man if I stop.
