I try to stretch the muscle and limbs I am working on in between each set to help with flexability. I do not have a whole program set aside just for flexability. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Yes!!! I stretch everyday, even if I'm not going to the gym that day. Flexibility provides a number of benefits. You will have a much better workout if you stretch your muscles on a regular basis. Your muscles won't get as sore after a hard workout. Stretching allows fresh oxygen and blood to the muscles. Stretching promotes muscle growth. You will feel better after a good stretching routine because of the release of endorphins. Your muscles won't feel as tight during the day so you will have more energy. Now if you've never stretched before, it is natural that you won't be very flexible at first. But, just like anything else, if you work on your stretching you will get better in time and you will start feeling better because stretching also helps in a better nutriant intake to vital cells and tissues. I strongly encourage you to put together a solid stretching routine that stretches all of the major muscles. Good luch! --------------------------------------- Train.........................(S)mart IP: Logged |

To add to larges post the more range of motion that the joint can produce which means strectching the soft tissues the more power you will be able to produce. If you've ever noticed sprinters have very loose muscles. IP: Logged |

Well Rexie, i use a whole lotta different exercises..when i started stretching out seriously..when i was about 16..i used to stretch for 30-45 minutes a day after my workouts. focused mainly on legs and back...using all the movements you can think of. also did forced stretching, with people pressing me slowly, not forcing me rough though...cuz ten you will hurt yourself...eventually i got so flexible i could do show of stuff like splits between chairs and so... now i stretch for 15 minutes after my leg days, and 5 on every other days. to me being flexible is something im used to..so when i put my feel above my head and stuff, just to stretch, i sometimes forget how it may look when i offseason wheigh 230 pounds plus, ans i am able to do the splits like it was nothing...people think im a show of i think..but they dont realize that being so flexible i have to do the splits and stuff to really feel the stretch...anyway...keep stretching...im no special guy at all, so anybody can do it. ------------------ "...damn you for not giving my TEST" - Metallica "After this show i'll be fat and happy again.....If i make it to the show...." - Lee Priest "Lets put some weight on the bar.." - Shawn Ray IP: Logged |

I was really hating the gym about a year ago. My workouts were exhausting, and I would be so wired up afterwards that I was uncomfortable, and I stopped growing. So, I started taking yoga classes, and I love it. The yoga has increased my flexibility dramatically, and it has improved my ability to work out as well. There is a controlled burn that you learn to get into during a serious yoga session, that can be directly applied to a weight session. I don't recommend any wimpy yoga, because if you are like me, you are in pretty good shape, go for powerflow, or ashtanga, or something like that. The yoga adds balance, increases coordination, loosens up tendons and muscles dramatically, fixes posture problems, and feels great for days afterwards. I am now doing both weight training and yoga and they are both comming along so well as a result of the combination. The yoga people all flip out over how strong I am, and the lifters flip out over how flexible I am. It is pretty cool to get some really large quads into a full lotus. Seriously, though, I belive that yoga combined with wieght training is absolutely the best! IP: Logged |

Basically Large summed it all up for you but I do have to stress the fact that Stretching promotes muscle growth. Try stretching in between sets the muscles that you are training. IP: Logged |

I always stretch between sets, but never knew how to properly stretch my shoulders. Now I have tendenitis in both of my shoulders, thanks to my lack of shoulder stretching. Make sure you stretch! I'll be recovering from this for a year or better. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I can almost do lateral splits w/ warmup. Say, you want to improve lateral splits. Basically, after a warmup, you get into the split position and tense your hip adductors for 30 sec. Rest 1-2 min. When you start, use your hands to hold you up. When you become experienced, use your body weight to hold yourself up. IP: Logged |
