Why do people use the smith machine to squat rather than do the free squats. I am not able to determine this. beginners or women are ecxeptions but I see expert lifters using it. bad joints are not an excuse because both types place stress on the same places. And with free bar squats these is those bars to help if the bar falls off your shoulders and on the smith machine it is way at the bottom and are little rubber pads. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I do not use the Smith, but the reason I feel people use it is to isolate the muscle they are working. Whem using the Smith you do not have to use stablizing muscles so you can concentrate more on a certain muscle group you want to work. IP: Logged |

I guess its so they dont have to have a spotter. My friend lifts at this gym I used to go to, left for a better one, but noone goes in there. The guy that runs the place isn't even there half the time(hes at my gym), just leaves it open for my friend. So my friend will lift and not have a spotter, use the smith for almost everything. Just a sense of security in case he can't do the weight, but I think he actually squats using free weights not on the smith. I ain't sure why people do though. Probably just the security thing. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I don't think anyone should squat on a smith machine. It keeps you locked into a single plain during the motion. I think you have to be able to move. I know when I squat, the bar does not move perfectly perpendicular to the floor. The machine seems it would place added stress on the knees by keeping you locked in place. IP: Logged |

I agree with everything above plus the fact that some beginners will use it to get used to the movement and aslo people with injuries. I've never used one for squats though. IP: Logged |

its a great way to isolate the quads, especially if you do front squats. also its a goof way to learn to keep your back straight as you lift. ------------------ "...damn you for not giving my TEST" - Metallica "After this show i'll be fat and happy again.....If i make it to the show...." - Lee Priest "Lets put some weight on the bar.." - Shawn Ray IP: Logged |

It is also a very good way to end up injured. It is a horrible way to learn form. I would only suggest it to an experienced trainee who is recovering from a back injury, and only briefly (2-3 weeks) IP: Logged |
