When I do them I have my hands close together, my neck bent down so I can squeeze the top. My knees are bent slightly. Do you have to get full contraction on this movement, or should you just go heavy?

Shoulders to your ears and squeeze and hold it at the top, for about a two count or so. Slow and controlled as usual. Don't pull with your arms, they are just hooks on the bar (or dumbell). Just concentrate and all should go well.

I think on this one, heavy weight is the most inportant factor, but not to the point that the weight is only fractionally moving. Sounds like your'e doing them right, also don't bother with that rotation crap.

So I take it both of you are saying you do not have to get the full contraction? I started doing mine on the Smith Machine. What do you think about doing them on it?

i wouldnt put my head down if i were you..
1. it puit your neck in an unatural position
2. and you dont want to train muscles to make your neck face down...it can cause bad posture and could hurt your neck...

just keep it straight up like you do when you walk (natural)

I tried it with my neck straight up and the range of motion is really small. Maybe I'll try again.

I've always liked doing shrugs with my head forward and down just a little. I get a better isolation and squeeze with my traps. They are also the bodypart I get the most compliments on. Just don't do anything that feels bad or questionable. If you get the feeling that you may be setting yourself up for an injury based on what you're feeling, you most likely are.

theyre best done with a pair of heavy dumbbells held at your side palms facing each other neck straight.bring shoulders up
and rotate backwards to the start position...
by the way,if you are a novice doing shrugs
will do little to your traps you need multi joit exercises for mass emphasize deadlifts and behind the neck press...

I like doing shrugs with dumbells and barbell, use heavy weight that you can get the full "squeeze" from and hold for the 2 count. I've never tried them on a smith, maybe I'll give that a go.

rotate backwards to the start position? Please explain that in more detail. I hope you're not recommending that he brings his shoulders up, rotate them back (or roll them), and then lower them down.

Hey Dude, don't worry. I know better than to role my shoulders while doing shrugs. Thank you though.
