on back days i have been usually doin lat pull downs frontward bringing the bar down to my chest-but ive started to do them backwards and pull the bar down to behind my neck-now someone told me that it was dangerous to do them like that and it would hurt me in the long run - ??? IP: Logged |

It's rough on your shoulders, however I feel it a lot more in my lats and upper back when I pull down behind my head. For me it is a more effective method. And just as a note, I have never experienced any pain doing them like this. IP: Logged |

I do not do them because I have heard of risks with the shoulders and spine. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think if you have good form with your chest out and upper back straight and just pulling with your back and lats it is a good movement. But I have seen some pretty funny things in my gym. These guys are swinging, using there momentum to get the weight down. Well you know what I mean. IP: Logged |

Personally i wouldn't do this one, especially if you have any shoulder injuries. Also you have to use a wide grip when you go behind your head, which shortens the range of motion, so your not getting as much of a stretch and contraction as the front pull down. Also heard an interesting fact the other day, most gym fatalities are caused by the cable snapping during this excercise and the bar hitting the victim in the back of the head.Thats some nasty shit. This is a real good midback exercise. If it hurts your back, do it with a cable crossover apparatus. Kneel down and hold the cable pulldown and squeeze your back. IP: Logged |

Great exercise for mid back. I had a friend who was doing a shit load of weight, the cable broke and he hit himself on the head with a steel bar. Gave him a concussion and he was out of football for 3 weeks. Good player too. Just be careful IP: Logged |

Not a functional movment,it is a high risk exercise, not as effective as other back exercises, bottom line avoid it if possible. IP: Logged |

This one's concerned me too. My rotator cuff is shot to hell, so I do these really light now, and even so by the third set I feel it in my shoulder. I still feel it a lot more in the back if I do it behind the head, but unfortunately I feel it more in the shoulder too. My thinking is it's not worth the shoulder damage. IP: Logged |

I've never felt any pain. I feel these in my upper outer lats more than any other movement. Plus, the range of motion is a little shorter than to the front, so I can stack on the weight. I guess if it hurts, don't do it though. IP: Logged |
