I'm 43 and since turning 40 my strength has been spiroling down especially my bench (yes my bench had been an ego boast). Anyone else experience the same? Any recommendations? I've recently went from training bodyparts from twice a week to once a week. Thanks. IP: Logged |

I recommend creatine if you're looking for strength gains. Perhaps maybe a testoserone supplement. ZMA may work or some prohormones. Any supplement that will raise your testoserone levels. As you get older you testoserone levels decline. Check out www.netrition.com or www.prosourceonline.com good luck. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'm fory-one and stoppped lifting for the last two weeks. WHY? becuase of the same problem reduced poundages. I hope it is a case of over training, I will start lifting next week on a once a week/body part routine. I also am experiencing a problem with weight,it won't come off like it would in the past. Hydroxycut and increased cardio isn't helping.... IP: Logged |

Fitness for Life: I'm having the exact same problems with weight. I cut out the sugars and eating tuna right out of the can and increased my cardio. Guess it's time to accept things go slower as we age. But I can say even with the frustrations I won't quick lifting. I'll try the ZMA and see what happens. Also been thinking about seeing a doctor to have my test levels checked and maybe get prescribed ANDROGEL. IP: Logged |

I'll be 40 soon, been lifting heavy for gains for over 10 years.About 6 months ago I realized I was about as big as I wanta be and I've changed to a maintain what I got frame of mind. Don't get me wrong I still strive for progress but I don't set big goals like adding 50 lbs to my squat in a month or what not.If I was 20 I'd probaly wanta bench 4 and squat 6,but if I went after that stuff now It would be one long haul. I worked for 2 years to squat twice my weight for 5 x5 and I'm happy with that! Now I gotta keep it.Probaly not what you were looking to hear for advice but what the hell,it's my 2 cents.BTW I'm 210 lbs. at 5'11". Gymratgirl, does 39 1/2 qualify as old? IP: Logged |

Jag, I cut back to one bodypart per week too and at 42, I am getting gains better than when I was 22. It took me close to 30 years to discover I was overtraining! There is still some stuff I CANT do anymore..but after 3 back operations an elbow and knee sugery, I can train almost pain free...and Squat. IP: Logged |

if i was over 40 i would be going to the doctor and get put on testosterone replacement. just say your feel tired all the time low sex drive and lack of focus and no short term memory. and when you go to get your test levels checked it will probably be late afternoon so dont sleep the night before do cardio in the morning and absolutly don't eat anything. your test levels will sure to show up low. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'm only 32 (whew, that feels good to say - "only" 32) but I know what you guys are talking about. My problem hasn't been so much weakness but joint pain. One thing I have done is switch from a 4-day double-split routine to a 6-day single split. It's made a world of difference. My muscle size (though not strength) gains have resumed, and the injuries are better, and the muscle has better "quality" now - it's got a certain depth and hardness that isn't going to disappear tomorrow. Even making vascularity improvements. It was an adjustment not being pumped all the time, but when your body can't support your ego, something has to give! Oh, and gymratgrl - 32 old enough?
