I am interested in purchasing a home gym for strength training. Nothing fancy, under $1,000. I have looked at: 1. ProForm 920ci ($500) - Does anyone have any comments on this machine or company? Are there any other companies or products I should look at? I will just be starting out so I don't need anything fancy. Also, what are some good internet sites for purchasing fitness equipment? All comments are welcome. [This message has been edited by Lift (edited July 09, 2000).] IP: Logged |

Yeah...don't get some Walmart all-in-one machine shit. (I think you already know that) As the others said buy a good bench, d-bells, bars, and plenty of plates..... a power rack. Then if you have extra money for some machines get a pec-deck or lat machine or something. IP: Logged |

I'd just like to say that if you have $1000 to spend and a lot of space... you could build one kewl gym. But as their saying, free weights kick ass! IP: Logged |

OK guys, I guess I get the message. Thanks a lot for all your comments. This is not the easy road though; now I have to get educated on how to lift weights. Any good books or instructions videos you can recommend? IP: Logged |

A good place to get educated on lifting weights would be www.fitnessonline.com, just go under the exersize section and go under any of the bodybuilding pages or weight training and they will usually show you some good exersizes along with pics. Also on espn2 in the mornings around 8 or 9 am there are a lot of fitness shows, Kiana fitness is one of the best ones....watch those and then get some books at the library.....learning how to lift ins't that hard. an adjustable bench dip bar&chinup station 400 lbs of weights power rack and dumbells this would be about as close as you could get to getting a great workout for under or just around the $1000 mark. with as much variety as yo could get. IP: Logged |

Get a gym membership for a few months, if your new to lifting its a good place to get help with lifting movements. Then if your still into it, look in your paper for used equipment, there's always lots of stuff in there people want to get rid of because they thought buying some weights would make them buff only to find out they had to do some work as well. What you need is a power rack that is fully adjustable. An adjustable bench with olympic freeweight set and dumbells. A Lat pull-down machine and Leg extension/curl would be nice too. The powerack is great because their fully adjustable for bar height and safety bars incase you lifting alone.. IP: Logged |

I would seriously look at the book Brawn and I guess they have a new book out called Beyond Brawn but I haven't read that one. Anyway these are good books aimed at real world people, not genetically blessed and/or chemically enhanced individuals. The same group also publishes a magazine called Hardgainer. FWIW IP: Logged |
