Some people say that deadlifts can cause hernias. Is there any truth to this? Have any of you got one from deadlifting? IP: Logged |

Anytime you lift anything there is always a chance of a hernia. For example, you could be lifting a box off the ground in your garage and could cause something to rupture. I have never had a hernia before and I never knew anyone who had got one from deadlifting. As long as you use good form and dont put too much stress down by the lower abdomin area...you should be fine IP: Logged |

Hernia is from a natural weakness in the abdominal wall. Extreme weight lifting could cause it to break through sooner than normal but eventually, even without lifting heavy weight, they usually will go if you have this internal weak area. Believe me, you will know when you get one. IP: Logged |

men are more likely to get hernia's then woman, because their abdominals are structured differently; but if a woman does gett a hernia by chance, she will be unable to have children. IP: Logged |

Mr Muscle, to answer your question it is difficult to say. Some guys can strenghten their internal wall muscles to help prevent a hernia, to a certain point. However depending on how weak the area was prior to any training, or how much internal force is placed on that weaken area, could cause the weaken area to finally go. Unforunately there is no way of knowing who has this weakness and who does not. Even some of the pro BB have had a hernia after years of training, then one day it goes. IP: Logged |

Well the answer to your question is yes deadlifts can cause hernia's. But any other strenous exercise can too. I"m only eighteen and i've had a hernia repaired about a year ago. My abs were in real good condition at the time to and the doctor told me that males have a "natural" weakend part of the abdominal thats why a inguanal hernia is a common injury. just use proper form and make sure your breathing while lifting, and you should be alright.
