I'm not trying to sound like a dick...I'm serious. I've been training for little more than a year now, but I'm confused. I want to put some quality weight on my bones however I don't want to carry more fat and water than I need. How much cardio is enough to melt that shit away without atleast moderate catabolic effects?

I am not sure what body type you have or what your metabolism may be like. In general, doing cardio 3 times a week for 30 minutes each session is average for fat maintenance.

always go with the slow burn instead of high intensity. go for longer periods so that you keep your breathing relatively controlled. 30 min is a good reference time 3x. until you start getting serious about really cutting (dropping alot of fat) then you should be alright with that plan.
some people like to run, not me. ill walk on the treadmill for 30-40 min at a higher angle incline and find it more effective for me. running shoots me past my thermogenic state into a cardiovascular endurance mode.

I always wondered about that. You don't see too many endurance athletes carrying around excess bodyfat. Is high cv exercise really not effective at bodyfat reduction?

When i bulk up i prefer not getting to fat, so i do cardio every third day, 30 minutes on a stairclimber. workd great, u wont have a spare tire around your waist, BUT u wont have an outstanding sixpack either.
