Like all lifters I need protein. The thing is I can't afford to pay for those shakes or powders. Plus I've never really been into using powders, juice, etc. Yes, I'm a natural and probably not welcome to sites that involve using it. I ain't got anything against that stuff, but I'm too young to get into that.(16) Anyways, what natural foods and drinks are high in protein?

well, if u dont wanna use whey and stuff u could go out and buy eggwhite powder. its tasts like shit, but its cheap. the usuall foods are eggs, meat, fish, low-fat milk. Those are the most common.

Try mixing egg whites with skimmed milk to make a protein drink. Or if you can stomach it - try liquidising liver and milk.

Egg whites, tuna, milk, lean meats.

A great snack you can make is a tuna burger.
mix 2 egg whites with a can of tuna
take the top off of both sides of the tuna can and place it in a pan on the stove and pour the tuna and egg whites into it. heat on medium untill the egg whites aren't runny. Remember to flip. Makes a great protein rich snack :-)

Newnatural,

That is like a treat I found out about. Crab stuffed deviled eggs. You make deviled eggs like you normally do but add some cheap canned crabmeat to the yolk stuff in the middle. I must eat about a dozen of them a week.

Hey StevieD, I thought it was dangerous to your health to drink raw eggs. Is this true or not?

Raw eggs have the possibility of containing Salmonella enteriditis. It is estimated to be in 1 out of 20,000 eggs. There are now pasturized whole eggs now being sold. These are a couple more cents per dozen, but less risky.

Hey new natural, thanx for tellin me about that tuna burger. I tried to make it a burger but the son of a bitch fell apart so I just made it like I would a cheese steak and ate the thing on a plate. It tasted great.
How many grams of protein should I be getting? I hear 2 for every lb of body weight, I'm 140 so I'd be consuming about 280. Thats per day right? If so thats a shitload of protein.

Rexie - you want to consume at least 1 gram of protein per llb of bodyweight (try for more). Best thing to do is to work out how much protein you need and divide it over 7 or 8 meals a day (every 2-3 hours).

As for raw eggs - the risk is very low and I've got better things to worry about than 1 in 20,000 risks (it's more risky crossing the road!). Just eat them! Mayonnaise is made from raw eggs and loads of other things.

As for liquidised liver - take some raw liver and put it in a blender with some milk and blitz it = a shake. You can actually buy liver based protein drinks and dessicated liver tablets over here in the UK.

Yeah I would never drink raw eggs, besides it only takes like 10 min. to boil them and you don't even have to do anything just throw em in a pot with water. 1g/per pound of body weight is general for weight lifters. If your on a ckd though you'll probably need to up it.

By the way the tuna-burger tastes great if you put it in a tortilla and add a little salsa to it. mmmmm I'm getting hungry time for a protein bar :-)

Different people have a deferent level of resistance to salmonella than others. Almost everything raw has some degree of Salmonella in it. All kinds of bacteria are present and you will never be able to avoid all of it. Your body has the ability to fight off all of them. The problem arises when the raw food you eat has so much bacteria in it that your body is unable to fight it off. Esp. when you are working out and your body's immune system is weakened while repairing itself from the workouts.

It is OK to ingest raw food if you follow some simple guidelines:

1. Buy it as fresh as you can.

2. Never take it out of the cold unless you plan to ingest it right away.

3. Insure your refrigerator is set at or below 35 degrees F.

4. Check your refrigerator cold temp often using an accurate thermometer.
My feeling is that to some degree the phrase "what hurts you makes you stronger" is true for food bacteria. In other words: we can make our world entirely sterile but to do so will weaken our immune system to the point you will be at risk all bacteria. Soon our gene pool will produce weak individuals that can't survive on our own planet.

After all, animals eat spoiled raw food all the time and they have evolved to handle it, it is only natural. At some point man decided to sterilize everything he ate and now is not able to deal with small amounts of microorganisms, which he actually needs to survive.

Good post Stone, a new perspective way to look at things. I'll give my mom that excuse next time she tells me to clean my room :-) I see it now "but mom, if my room is always clean then soon I'll be unable to handle dust and stuff so when I'm in a dirty place I'll get sick" okay maybe that wouldn't work.
