Mass building - Free weights definately.
They force you to control both phases of the lift. They force you to control total range of motion and speed.

Cutting - Both.
Nautilus - You can drop set to failure w/o a spotter.
Free weights - you can keep 'em light and superset bodyparts.

I would say that beginners start out with nautilus in order to get used to the perfect range of motion.

I've done both and felt the difference. I fell that you get a better workout from free weights but you definitly need a spotter. I was a moron once and lifted free weights without a spotter...lets say it wasn't my smartest decision. As for machines, you can do a variety of exercises that can't really be done with free weights. Both should be done with a spotter but I think you could get away without having one. To get to the point though, I prefer machines.

I believe free weights are better for mass and better stabilization strength - especially dumb-bell usage. However machines can hit muscles much differently with not as many hazards to contend with. I would not want to use just one or the other. I perform 3/4 free weights and 1/4 machines in my overall workouts.

Free weights absolutely are the best. You work all the support muscles to control the weight. If you beefed on Nautilus, you could get to a point that you are stronger than the surrounding muscles needed when you do something big outside the gym. That's when you get pulls and tears and injuries. There's not much cooler than doing shit others can't. Do the heavy stuff with free weights and nautilus for detail/exhaustion work after.
