fitrex is alright, but in my opinion, if you follow their workouts exactly, you will be overtraining. it is good for beginners to get an idea of a split, but adjust it so you aren't killing yourself.

Hey man!

So you want to build some mass. Here's a few things to keep in mind.
1. Keep it heavy: No light weight crap. I would use a weight where you can only do 6-8 reps at the absolute max.
2. Keep it slow: Don't do it fast, that'll only give you endurance. If you keep the pace down (3-4 secs in each direction) the muscle fibers will be worked better.
3. Protein: If your pumping serious iron you need to increase you daily protein intake. If you don't get enough protein, the muscle will actually eat themselves up for protein. Then guess what, you find yourself losing mass. Protein shakes are good. You can also eat high protein foods such as egg whites, fish, chicken, nuts ect, beef has it too but higher in fat.
4: Do 10+ sets if you want to build mass quicker.
5: Free weights and pressing exercises: I am a strong believer that free weights are better for all around mass, rather than machines (not that machines are bad). So use free weights and do 'pressing exercises, such as the bench press, behind-neck-press, squats. These exercises are good for butting some meat on your bones and have stood the test of time. Keep in mind however that if you want to keep up good bodily proportions you have to do non-press exercises also. Exercises like preacher curls (for biceps), tricep extensions...ect..

Well, I hope all that helps you. If I think of anything else I'll post another message.

Max258 - 20-25 sets! How many hours are you in the gym? Ever heard the expression "If you can hammer a nail into a piece of wood in one go, why hit it again?"

Try this HIT workout. Be sure to do 2 warm up sets of 15 reps for each exercise. In this routine you will be working out less but more intense. The most common mistake that many people make is overtraining. You always want to come refreshed for your next workout. If you don't recover from your previous workout, rest another day or two. Here's the routine:

Workout 1
Squat 3 x 12-20
Bench Press 3 x 5-8
Bent-Over Barbell Row 3 x 5-8
Knee-Up 3 x 20

Workout 2
Stiff-Leg Deadlift 3 x 12-20
Standing Barbell Press 3 x 5-8
Barbell Shrugs 3 x 5-8
Standing Calf Raise 3 x 12-20

Do not do these workouts two days in a row, keep at least two days in between each workout. You should only be doing each workout once a week. You really want to crank up the intensity. Each one of your work sets should be very hard, so hard that you have to mentally focus in order to complete each set. I used to be very skeptical when it came to HIT, but I found that it's harder than it looks. Add a little weight every week or two. Follow this for three months and then change it around. In this workout, you don't need to do any arm work. You're arms will come into balance as you progress. This type of training is very different from other training methods. I hope this helps.
