I am very pissed off because I think I hurt my lower back and I have no one to blame but myself. I worked out my back and bi's on Wed and felt no pain until yesterday. I did 4 sets lat pull down behind the neck and 4 in front, 4 cable low row, 4 bent over row, 4 preacher curls, 4 seated alternating dumbbell curls. I only work back/bi's once a week. I warm up, stretch, and wear a belt. I'm not doing insane weight and I keep good form and control. How long should I rest to heal? What can I do to treat what I'm hoping is only strained muscles? How can I avoid this kind of injury in the future?

...put heat on it(hotpack, heating pad)as much
as possible.Start stretching as much as possible-sucks I know,I like to just pound weights but stretching helps.Search around a little on the net, lots of stretching info around.Start working those hamstrings-the more they can handle the less your lower back gets.Also-after your back feels better-hit the abs;not for fat loss but for muscle strengthing. If your pain persists I highly recommend a visit to your local chiropractor.

Do what bleedo said to take care of the pain, but you might want to stop using a lifting belt from now on.

Wearing a lifting belt takes stress away from the lower back during lifts and, for the most part, takes it out of the equation. What happens when a muscle isn't doing any work? It doesn't get stronger - hell, it might even get weaker. A weak lower back is the last thing you want to have when you are lifting weights.

I have been squatting and deadlifting heavy (relative to my bodyweight) for the past year. The only belt I have ever worn was one to hold up my pants. My back is perfectly healthy and is extremely strong.

As for those behind-the-neck lat pulldowns, you might want to read my reply to danielson in the what exercises leave you prone to injuries and why? thread. That exercise is not good for your back, neck, shoulders, etc.

Take care, dude. I hope you recover quickly. A friend of mine had a minor back injury, but believe me, even the minor ones suck.
