I read an article that claimed playing basketball was worthless for cardio fitness because your heart rate is not elevated to a certain level for a continuous amount of time. I always get out of breath when I play, how can this not be good exercise. I always play full court. Any expert opinions?

SURE I think it'd be considered a cardio exercise!

Yes, it is considered Cardio, more specifically it falls under the category of High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T.), which is a form of cardio that is gaining in popularity and acceptance with advocates such as Clarence Bass and Bill Phillips. Sprint/Jog is probably the most preferred method in HIIT, but Hoops fits in this category despite lacking structured intervals.

Thanks, I guess I'll keep this as part of my exercise routine.

I have read somewhere that the definition of cardiovascular exercise is an exercise that keeps the heart rate above its normal level for a minute and a half or more. ------------------

Full court basketball is great cardio. Fun as hell too. My second favorite sport after bodybuilding. Anyone that has ever played organized high school or college ball will tell you that you really take a beating in a serious game. Especially down in the post where I used to play (and still do in pick up games.) The ability to mix strength in boxing out/rebounding with somebody constantly pushing on you and then be able to srint back down the floor is a unique conditioning requirement for an inside player. However, I would advise against too much of that kind of play if you are looking to put on a lot mass...it burns a ton of calories. ------------------

we've been playing at school for awhile. It's the best cardio I believe because it's fun so when you're sitting there about ready to puke you just keep running. but no, if you go play horse for 20 minutes that's not cardio, hehe

Really. Beats the hell out of staring at a readout on a treadmill for 30 min. ------------------

Bump... I'd much rather be playing basketball, mountain biking, or skiing, than staring into empty space on a treadmill for a wasted half hour of my life. But alas I do it anyway.
