I have been doing 3 sets of 10 - 15 with dumbbells wear I roll my shoulder from the front to the back. Then I do 3 sets of just regular shrugs.

This dude at the gym last night said he read somewhere that it is not necessary to do the rolling shrug exercise to work the muscle. Is this true?

Also how many sets/exercises should you do to effectly build this muscle?

curling;one word of advice...DON'T ROLL YOUR SHOULDERS.this is useless and can spark injury.as far as building this muscle, work it w/ back or shoulders and incorporate 2-3 sets of HEAVY db shrugs.by heavy,i would stay in the 4-6 rep range and forget the 15 reps.traps respond well to heavy loads and don't take long to "pronounce" themselves.i would also incorporate close grip upright rows...once again HEAVY!staying in the 4-6 rep range.good luck.

I do cleans, clean & presses, deads, high pulls, tire flip...and farmer's walk. I think that the farmer's walk really kills me the most.

I agree with Big Thinker! rolling your shoulders will only lead to injury. Keep it heavy and your traps will pop right up.

rolling shoulders does nothing but fuck up your rotator cuffs, gravity works straight up and down. moving your shoulders from the front to the back puts no different stress on your traps but it does grind your rotators.

Thanks. I appreciate the advice. Plus I didn't like doing that rolling shoulder bit anyway. I will go heavier like ya'll suggest on the straight up and down ones.

curling...glad to see you've taken our advice.one thing to remember is that you should use your body's natural mechanics when performing any exercise.this also includes momentum!!!just don't get stupid;if it feels wrong than chances are it is...no matter what people tell you...i truly beleive that people sometimes "cheat" themselves by being too strict.the body was meant to move all kinds of ways therefore, incorporate your body's mechanics into your training to prevent injury and in addition, increase your overload.fyi...just something i beleive you should keep in mind.think for yourself no matter what everyone else is doing and keep asking your questions on this board!!!
